A highly unfocused film, The Hundred Foot Journey never decides if it is a foodie film, a family story, an example of globalization mixed with xenophobia, or a love story. To its detriment it tries to be all these things. It wasn't particularly funny, and its awkward exposition turned out to be irrelevant. To put it in food terms, the lingering effect is like biting into a dry, starchy, tasteless cake that has a soft centre -- and even that soft gooey centre is unpalatable and saccharine.
