This film seems to be relatively disliked because it doesn't contain as much action as the other films, which is a shame, because it's probably the best of the lot so far. There's a lot of subtle commentary on the power of propaganda, and the reality of revolutions. This isn't about a war of firepower, so much as it is a war of mindshare, and it's far more interesting and unique for it.

It's refreshing to see a movie aimed at young adults which has the balls to take on these kind of topics, but I have a sad feeling it'll be punished for it.

Good movie, great acting, great effects, all that. But I kinda feel the split of the book shows too much. There's no real climaxe to this movie because there's just no climaxe in the middle of a book. Still a good movie but it just really comes off as a build up for the last one, which it obviously is. But, honestly, this could've all just been one movie and we'd all be happy. Instead we have to wait another year for the end which feels kinda unnecessary.

This movie is very different from the two first in the series, and at some points, it actually felt like a completely new story. I guess that many die-hard fans will dislike this, but for a guy who is older than their target group for the first movies, this was absolutely excellent. I have previously stated that the first and second movies are very childish, and now they finally took it a step further and grew up.

Overall a good movie, the cinematography, plot, acting and soundtrack is surprisingly good. spoiler

It is a long and relatively slow movie, but it does what it is made to do; fill us in on the story and build up the excitement for Part 2. If you don't have any interest in the series, wait until the last one comes out, so you can watch them together. If you like the series, go ahead, but it will be a long year to wait, it ends right before things are going to happen.

Yes, there are many unrealistic and "what" things going on, spoiler but this is not meant to be a realistic story. It's another sci-fi/action/drama depicting a dystopian society which would not be realistic by any means, of course the heroes will be "too good", and certain parts will be a bit over the top, but that is what it is, and we should take it as such.
As for the discussion on if they could have finished it in one part; they could, but I believe that the result would have been mediocre at best. There is a lot going on despite being a slow movie, but this will probably be the point where a lot of people fall off due to the lack of action.

Captures the dark and morbid atmosphere through the usage of cinematography, the scenes filled with silence and merely no dialogue fit very well to emphasise on the darker moments in the film.

Tedious load of film clichés.
- baddies who can't shoot straight
- 30 secs to get into a closing bunker door (they make it, what a surprise)
- tedious love interest in Peter that I literally couldn't give a sh*the about
- expected responses from all characters at all time, no surprises

Mockingjay - Part 1 continues the semmingly endless Hollywood tradition of splitting in two the last book of a franchise. While I admit I haven't read the books yet, it's extremely noticeable that the film is only one half of a complete story, Given that the only two key plot developments take place during the climax, the film is replete with repetitive scenes depicting endless discussions between the senior members of District 13 and Katniss Everdeen, spoiler

Returning director Francis Lawrence opts for an increased use of hand-held camera, sparingly used in Catching Fire, and provides a claustrophobic but mostly monochoromatic look to the film, which takes largely indoors. The ensemble and great cast is sadly wasted, and not even Julianne Moore and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman get to make much of an impression. Jennifer Lawrence, in a melodramatic and ocassionally overreacted performance, doesn't have much to do in the film, as Katniss spends practically 90% of the film constantly whining and crying. Hopefully Mockingjay Part 2 will provide a memorable finale.

I've got to say although I did like the previous two parts, "Mocking Jay 1" impressed me the most so far. Which is no mean feat, given that a very big part of the movie takes place in one single location (which has only moderate visual appeal)...

spoiler

When it comes to actors, the audience is lucky to see yet another movie still containing a lot of screen time of Philip Seymour Hoffman - his performance was marvellous and yet another reason to mourn his early passing.

Furthermore I was glad to see a bit more of Liam Hemsworth and to be kept second guessing about who Katniss might end up with. (I didn't read the books.)

All in all, a movie that clearly exceeded my expectations. Well done!

I saw the first two Hunger Games on DVD and thought they were just okay. The third installment, Mockingjay Part 1, I saw in theaters, and though that certainly has a more absorbing effect, I would cite other reasons for it being the first Hunger Games movie to actually move me. For one thing, it's not about those gimmicky games. In the first two films, you could feel the episodic feel of the source material, with its succession of disparate threats, the games a delivery system for incident. Mockingjay is about a rebellion against the Capital blooming, but more than that, it's about propaganda. And as a theme and topic, it's handled with a little more depth than I would have thought (given the other films' far more obvious attack on reality shows, and less than hidden metaphor about growing up). We know the Capital is evil, and that Katniss is good, but the way the Rebellion manipulates information falls into a gray area at best, and that's a whole lot more interesting than throwing the kids into another round of pointless games. I suppose the books grew up with its audience; as a movie franchise, it's just now managed to reach this already wizened audience member.

This is the first film in the series I watched.
It feels like 12-year old girls have written this. A lot of talk, triangle relationships (apparently a sexual fantasy by teen girls, hence twilight) which doesn't go anywhere.

No logic at all in tactics by both parties in war.

The most exciting scene was if a cat could make it into the bunker.

It was really hard to keep my laugh when spoiler

The physics seem to work differently spoiler

So what was interesting? The cgi was reasonable and I liked Hoffman's acting to keep things going.
