I like the plot - towards the end, it gets weird, somewhat racist, too. But it has high moments, and even funny moments like the praying shawl scene. In a few words: a Jewish boy sings jazz music, his father - a Cantor - does not admit it and manages to die right when the Jewish boy is starring in a Broadway show that depicts a black person (sad but true, makes me think of the "black face" debate that runs nowadays).
I find it interesting how the movie was edited, by repeating the same fragment over and over - like the applause scene after Jakie Robin's first appearance in a bar. Don't think it is so blend, after all.

Loved this movie! The half silent/half talkie concept was a little odd but not too distracting. The story line was tense-filled and hit at the heart. How does one follow ones heart yet not turn ones back on ones upbringing, including family, religion and expectations?sammysin
This really hit home for me. Everything about it was awesome.Incredible to see it made in 1927, it feels every bit as good as some modern classics.

This is a very poorly made film. I also think it's responsible for causing the shift to sound before the technology was really ready, certainly most early talkies are quite clumsy, especially compared to the cinematically rich silents. In any case, the hybrid sound/silent thing here was arbitrary and the casual use of black face isn't doing this any favors.tippaty

OK, it's Krusty the Klown's story. The more movies I watch, the more Simpsons references I get that I could never be expected to catch in highschool. The plot of every episode is basically just some old movie.tapiridae
Perhaps it's fascinating as a historical document, but as a movie it's plain awful. The silent/talkie combo is aggravating. The plot is not very interesting. I can understand that people at the time saw this as a gizmo.BaalMan
