Sorry...WERE breathtaking.baraka92
The last 30 minutes we're breathtaking, everything else was just ok. Tom Hooper's direction wasn't that special so I'm still in shock that he won the DGA over David Fincher. But taking away all the hype, it was a nice watch.

The most overrated film of the year, Colin Firth is very good (although he was better in A Single Man) but the plaudits it is receiving is pretty ridiculous. Any of the BAFTA nominees for best picture outclass it apart from perhaps The Fighter which is better but not by a huge amount. I left feeling it was a fairly good film with excellent performances but nothing to rave about and it felt better suited to TV to be perfectly honest.7.5/10

preferably seen Stephen Fry cast in this movie, can't explain why. Enjoyable to watch, nice film, if you don't mind the slow parts of the moviedeepak1990
loved it!kabrink
Don't worry Duke. Just give imdb time. Highly acclaimed new movies always jump into the top 250 right away but the list almost always stabilizes to an acceptable order. As for my thoughts on the movie, the simplicity of the plot and the power of the characters really highlighted the tense and fearful time just before WWII. I also really enjoyed examining the prominent figures of the time in a more personal light than as tools that caused the progression of the war (i.e. plot). You get to view real people and how they responded to the pressures of war both politically and personally.

Agreed with Duke of Omnium and Crinderman - the film is quite superficial, ultimately. A real disappointment in that regard. Good performances though.Duke of Omnium
It's a nice movie and all, but kind of superficial. Hard to believe this is really sitting at #143 (at this moment) on the Top 250, putting it above The 400 Blows, Stalag 17, and Hitchcock's Notorious.St. Gloede
It was good but rather underwhelming. Wasn't too taken in with Firth either (he has nother on Eisenberg, Franco, Stiller, Damon, Whalberg, eller C.Affleck). The cinematography was wonderful, though perhaps a bit too stylized for a non-artis...tic film. The filming was nice as well, but the shakey cam didn't really fit(it came in at er random parts).Overall it's just the story that's lacking. I just don't see why it's all that important/where the emotions+strenghts are supposed to lay. Firth does a human performance in a minimalistic and truthful way but I fail to be really invested in this characters. With a two hour running time it seemed to fly by and not leave too much at all.
Even now, bare minutes after seeing it, The King's Speech seems like a short. I will say that the acting was great from everyone involved and the direction of it all was rather solid, but overall there's just not that much there. 6/10.

A truly magnificent piece! I loved how it built up to that one speech, that one moment. Even though there were a few times it seemed a bit slow, it was just right. To what the story was, the film lacked nothing and was executed beautifully.(I wish people quit expecting it to be something it was not intended it to be.)

What frankqb said. A wonderful and warm character drama with great visuals. Firth and Rush are revelations.akuma587
Holds your interest, but certainly not perfect. Its definitely worth seeing, and Firth deserves the Oscar he will win in a little over a month.frankqb
A very good but seemingly cursory film that examines, albeit briefly, the life of Prince Albert, the Duke of York who became King George VI despite his own trepidation of being king and an accompanying stammer. Perhaps it was the build up of this film, but I found it to be not quite as engaging as it could and should have been as it barely scratches the surface of the issues at play in this story. And yet, despite the familiar trappings, this film does seem to be more than Oscar bait. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth's performances are quite remarkable, and Hooper's direction (despite the seeming shallowness of his treatment) is consistent and very watchable. I just wish it went a bit further in developing its themes to make it a truly classic film.Showing items 46 – 60 of 60
