A truly magnificent piece! I loved how it built up to that one speech, that one moment. Even though there were a few times it seemed a bit slow, it was just right. To what the story was, the film lacked nothing and was executed beautifully.
(I wish people quit expecting it to be something it was not intended it to be.)

The King's Speech, 2010's best picture, surprised me by moving me less than 15 minutes in. So put me down as being in agreement with the Academy this year. It shares something with the same crop of nominee's The Social Network in being entirely better than the premise would seem to suggest. I mean, a stuttering king's radio address? When I say it like that. But it's also the story of a royal succession, an underdog story, a bromance, a boxing movie (boxing with words), and played by amazing actors against the shadow of the second World War. The King's Speech is touching, funny, interesting, and has a look that psychologically underscores its protagonist's mindset (lots of recursive imagery, for example).

I put off watching this one for some time purely because of the poster design. The orange was too brash and I figured the film would be a largely political, confronting and dry - I could not have been more wrong. It's genuinely poetic, visually stunning and so gentle. I loved it

A very touching film, but I can see how it is not to everyones taste. A little slow, no action, nothing extraordinary just a feel good, touching film. Great cast and scripting. Beautifully done

Despite the fact my Grandmother went fox hunting with George VI in 1919-1920 I gave this an 8. Great film, I was also surprised at The Town, I also gave it an 8 due to the pace and acting. I gave Inception, Social Network (saw it last night) and Toy Story 3 a 9...for the action/depth of story and emotion mainly. (In that order for those films). Of the nominations, perhaps Toy Story 3 as it touched memories but there was something Shakespearean about Social Network...suspense, mystery and dialogue.

David Fincher definitely got robbed. This winning Best Picture was at least not as much of a debacle as the Slumdog Millionaire year, not even mentioning the year Crash won.

This is a solid film that I actually liked even more the second time around, I just thought The Social Network was a better film.

Don't worry Duke. Just give imdb time. Highly acclaimed new movies always jump into the top 250 right away but the list almost always stabilizes to an acceptable order.

As for my thoughts on the movie, the simplicity of the plot and the power of the characters really highlighted the tense and fearful time just before WWII. I also really enjoyed examining the prominent figures of the time in a more personal light than as tools that caused the progression of the war (i.e. plot). You get to view real people and how they responded to the pressures of war both politically and personally.

Agreed with Duke of Omnium and Crinderman - the film is quite superficial, ultimately. A real disappointment in that regard. Good performances though.

A very good but seemingly cursory film that examines, albeit briefly, the life of Prince Albert, the Duke of York who became King George VI despite his own trepidation of being king and an accompanying stammer. Perhaps it was the build up of this film, but I found it to be not quite as engaging as it could and should have been as it barely scratches the surface of the issues at play in this story. And yet, despite the familiar trappings, this film does seem to be more than Oscar bait. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth's performances are quite remarkable, and Hooper's direction (despite the seeming shallowness of his treatment) is consistent and very watchable. I just wish it went a bit further in developing its themes to make it a truly classic film.

I don't think the movie was THAT good. It's not a bad movie, but it's still very typical. Overcoming the odds and showing yourself in the end? Yeah, it's inspirational, but so is Remember the Titans, Stand and Deliver, and Soul Surfer. I won't deny that the acting in the movie was great, especially from Geoffrey Rush. He was the most entertaining person in the movie. I won't deny that it does have touching moments. What I will deny is that it is the Best Picture of 2010. The Social Network, Inception, Black Swan, and Toy Story 3 were better than this one in my opinion. There were much more dynamic parts in these four movies.
