It was a mistake to make this film in english...AlexDkad
Superb directing by Bertolucci, amazing story, complex characters, powerful commentary about the absurdities in politics and power, wonderful soundtrack and all you guys are talking about are the english dialogues ?! Seriously ??!!!!nishithrs
The scale and sets were cool, but it shouldn't be in EnglishZeuxippe
Yeah Zeltaebar, historic movies about real people and stuff that happened are sooooo predictable. Although I was surprised that communists took control of China in the end. How do they come up with this ?saydin7
i dont think i will watch it again all my lifeacoltismypassport
The English was a little distracting, though I began to notice it less and less as the film went on. I wouldn't say it's as good as Empire of the Sun, though I did really enjoy it. Quite surprising, considering the reviews I'd read before watching. Also, did anyone else notice quite early on that Pu Yi was played by the same actor (John Lone) as the character of Ricky Tan in Rush Hour 2? This provided a little comic relief, as the roles are worlds apart.

Interesting film about the last reigning emperor of China, but having it filmed with dialogue in English was very distracting.rwj
Found it long and boring. Can't see why it won Best picture the same years as Emperor of the sun and The Untouchables was released (and not even nominated)seithscott
It was great, and heartbreaking. The English did not harm the film at all, I thought it was a nice throwback to the old 50s and 60s epic films.Rohit
Dick, you mean it in the 'Grave of the Fireflies' way or what?Vika
The English, the English ...............Zeltaebar
Long, predictable (The very first scene gives the whole structure, plot and main theme of the movie away) and mostly boring. An unworthy winner of the Academy Award for best picture. If you are looking for a truly great epic / historical movie then try "Gandhi" or "Lawrence of Arabia". Those movies are even longer, but never feels dull or predictable.
