I really enjoyed the first movie. I admit the "fake documentary" style of horror movie really gets me freaked out. This movie, on the other hand, has none of the first movie's charm. It's slow, tedious, and lacking in scares. It might have worked as a mediocre stand-alone, but it flops as a sequel. 10 years 9 months ago -

As for the movie: the execution is undeniably lacking, but it was certainly misjudged by those who expected some sort of a super-frightening follow-up to the marginally flawed but effective The Last Exorcism. This sequel is a thematically difficult film made with the best possible intentions: it's meant to be a slowburn drama about Nell's mental and emotional struggles after the events of the predecessor, and its real strengths were so transparent for the prejudiced viewers most likely because of the movie's brutally slow pace, silly title and the fact that it's simply not in tune tonally with the first film.
I'm not saying that it's a good movie, but anyone who repelled it because of those reasons may want to re-evaluate it because it can be quite thought-provoking once one forgets that it continued a story that really didn't need to be (and shouldn't have been) continued in the first place. I would argue that as a sequel it definitely succeeds where Exorcist II (a fairly similar movie in terms of plot), for example, failed. 10 years 9 months ago
