Worth watching for the beautifully crafted opening shot alone, this film also features some truly eerie sequences, particularly those involving the chilling character of "Mrs. Hammond." Davis is terrific as usual.
There is only one conceivable reason why any serious film-goer would consider Bette Davis' looks & charm to be "intolerable". It is this: their orange, spray-tanned girlfriends see something striking in her; being unable to comprehend her unique beauty, these females turn their confusion into a contagious jealousy that their milquetoast boyfriends readily lap up.
That being said, I enjoy the movie, and Davis is a shining star as always. However, the stunning composition cannot be overcome by a redundant and somewhat predictable script. Yet I must reiterate that the cinematography is breathtaking at times.
Some great cinematography. But add to that a dull plot, crummy acting, and that oh-so-charming trivialization and pseudo-exoticism of foreign culture so typical of the colonial literature (I believe the American English term is "racist crap")...and to boot, none of the actors or actresses are all that pleasant to look at. (Oh, and, of course, they have a white person in "Asian-face," which couldn't possibly go terribly wrong, could it?)

Venetian blinds and jalousies! A lighting director's wet dream. Solid, if melodramatic, noir.deepshit_arkansas
Any who I think Bette did a marvelous job considering the god awful script she had to work withgreenhorg
The production code resulted in the movie getting a much more sinister ending than the play.ucuruju

I think Bette Davis' creepy bug eyes are more the problem than jealousy.Jumping Elephant
