A rather annoying and formulaic propaganda movie.Too long, too.
The main character is rather boring.
Deborah Kerr is wonderful, but she doesn't appear enough.

A spectacular film. Great performances (including 3 characters performed by Deborah Kerr); great production values (especially aging Makeup); and one of the best screenplays for a film I have seen. A hard movie to pigeonhole part satire; part comedy; part war movie part statement on what makes a ‘gentleman’ and a gentleman’s war. The story of British Officer Candy from the Boer War to WW2. The duel scene is one of the best scenes in movies. I think I found a new ‘favorite’.Qwijybo
I agree with Wozniak8 in finding the whitewashed nostalgia afforded the wars of colonization and even WWI in the first half of the film slightly troubling. And the Nazis are over-demonized (no small feat) in the latter half! While understandable given the year of release, I tend to agree with Gen. Candy's retort, "I heard all that in the last war."That said, this is a beautiful epic film with great performances by the three (five?) leads. To this American, the film does positively drip Britishness and this sense of reflection on Britain's culture and position in the world in the then-modern age is part of the charm and interest.
Much lighter in actual war than one would think a biography of a fictional military man would be. Instead, it is an account of the first half of the 20th century, meshing individual and historic perspectives. Equal parts humorous and emotional, it is captivating the entire time.

That was a damn fine movie, very enjoyable and fantastically well made. I was totally drawn into the story and as a non-Brit I think that says something.wowwee123

The most fantastically British movie ever. However, the last hour drags a bit.Wozniak8
It was a fine movie I guess, but doesn't it seem like a fantastical lie to anyone else, politically. Am I really supposed to get behind the Boer War or Europe in Africa as one of gentlemanly restraint and dignity?armyofshadows
Probably the greatest purely British film!screwball27

Fantastic use of montage, beautifully filmed and acted. Terrific moviegeorge4mon
the most boring war film ever.Alfredo Garcia
"It addresses something I've always been profoundly interested in – what it means to be English ... it is about bigger things than the war. It takes a longer view of history which was an extraordinarily brave thing for someone to do in 1943, at a time when history seemed to have disintegrated into its most helpless, impossible and unforgivable state."—Stephen Fry, interviewed by the Daily Telegraph, 2003
