Really beautifully made... and that's about it.
Efforts to modernize a story that was already too damn old to be told in 1989 end up just making it feel even more stale and forgettable.
Even the music, which was 90% of the reason the animated movie was successful, feels as flat as a can of soda opened decades ago.

Disney, please please please, just let the other animated movies rest and tell new stories.

Excellent sets, effects and action... And in particular acting by Melissa McCarthy.

Worth checking out

why a bird is underwater? - it's a seabird (Northern Gannet)
why the butler dines with the queen? - thats the Prime Minister. (Don't think the island has a Domino's yet.)
why the witch makes the magic without Ariel's signature or approval? - witches and wizards can be so rude on ocassions

Better than I thought it would be but still just a 6/10.

Ariel actress can sing but her acting was a bit flat.

Melissa McCarthy was a terrible Ursula, not menacing enough.

Awkwafina was too over the top and her rapping parts were clearly stale lin manuel lyrics.

Bardem was a good pick though.

I have yet to watch the original so don't need to make a comparison thankfully! In and of itself this movie was made really well. Great musical elements and the protahonist did a phenomenal job. Ursula was a great villian for sure!

As a huge fan of the original, I thought this remake was perfect in every way. Halle Bailey was phenomenal and deserves all the praise in the world for this role.

I loved the 1989 movie so it's impossible for me not to evaluate it comparing it with that.

And it's get's a 9/10 in those parameter. The movie keeps the magic of the original, the protagonist is flawless, and the adittion of more screentime for Prince Eric doesn't destroy the original feeling of the movie, it just gives it more depth.

Why not 10? Flounder assasination.

The script was meaningless... total copy of the original animation, but so much less coherent. the part they added are useless. (why a bird is underwater?) (why the royal family welcomes everyone the find on the beach as a son or special guest?) (why the butler dines with the queen?) (why the witch makes the magic without Ariel's signature or approval?) and I could go on forever... 3/10

I saw the 1989 animated version one time and really didn't like it so I didn't go into this movie with high expectations. I still don't find it a particularly interesting story but the characters were better developed and I liked the message at the end. The animal side kicks were fun and the chemisty between the two leads was pretty good. However there were still many moments, especially early on, where I got pretty bored.

Overall, I'd say this movie was ok. Kids will like it and it's not painful to sit through as an adult, unlike some kids movies that came out this year.
