The extended edition is pretty damn long, but it's never boring.. and even after 4 fucking hours you feel sorry for its ending. A trully magic and epic masterpiece!Scratch47
Nearly 10 years on and I think it's safe to say this is an unparallelled masterpiece of fantasy film making and one of the best films ever. The effects and spectacle are stirring and devastating for sure, the second half just rockets, but that's not why this film ages so well - the acting is across the board excellent (special note to Sean Astin and Andy Serkis), the production design is ornate and detailed (I particularly like the colour grading), and of course the score - my God, the score - is just sheer magic. There are plenty of moments that just leave you gasping, chilled, deeply moved, booing, laughing, cheering, even crying. The tone is powerful, dark, and demands the audience's attention fully over 4 hours, despite what some might (incorrectly) see as pompousness and overuse of tropes: this series ultimately triumphs as a deep and mature meditation on the evils of industry, friendship through trial, accepting mortality in the face of staggering odds, and the triumph of the human spirit over negative base instincts. It also served as a work that helped push fantasy into much greater social acceptability. The source material still rides above it in a few key sections (namely that the acrid stench of villainy is truly given its due in written form), but overall this is a majestic and crowdpleasing work, and a labour of love that will still take some time to top in its field. The extended-cut DVD trilogy requires sequential viewing over the course of a day, as has become commonplace for many, and should take pride of place in any movie fan's collection. The best of the three. The Battle of Pelennor Fields probably is the biggest battle scene ever filmed.Theoden_King

For me the LOTR-trilogy is still one of the greatest movies of all time - Peter Jackson is one of the directors I admire the most. A great story, visually very beautiful, a lot of really well-cast actors and some great action and emotions. Some people had a problem with the very long ending of the third part - but I have to say I was grateful for it. After such a great journey and several years of waiting for the big finale I was glad that the film was concluded step by step instead of abruptly. I'm also a fan of the books and I believe despite all the differences the film really does the story justice.Earring72
