This is absolutely brilliant. I really love Billy Wilder, he was a man ahead of his time. Stuff like this and Ace in the Hole could have been made yesterday, still relevant, still biting and still engaging.

Another classic from Billy Wilder - it justly won a slew of Oscars but seems comparatively unknown now next to his most famous films - perhaps the subject matter puts people off, but it must be one of the great films about alcoholism alongside "Days of Wine and Roses" and "Leaving Las Vegas"; like those films it hard to watch at times as Don spirals out of control. The 'La Traviata' sequence is fantastically well done, and Wilder's bitter humour is ever present, perhaps at its bitterest here. Great.

Still effective after all these years. It's sad that nowadays this film isn't as well-known as it should be.

Anatomy of an alcohol addict. Well directed and played.

"But what does it do to my mind? It tosses the sandbags overboard so the balloon can soar. Suddenly, I'm above the ordinary. I'm competent, supremely competent. I'm walking a tightrope over Niagara Falls. I'm one of the great ones. I'm Michelangelo molding the beard of Moses. I'm W Shakespeare."

Wow, such a dark undercurrent in this movie. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought it a strong PSA against alcohol (so much so that alcohol companies were wary of it) and Milland is incredible in the role of a man descending into oblivion, one drink at a time. Being made in '45, it was way ahead of its time and deserved all four of its Oscars.

Very powerful film; one can imagine that it is likely a very accurate portrayal of life as / with an alcoholic. Timeless...

Supremely effective, with all parties involved at the top of their game. I don't like alcohol much, but it made me feel like I was dying for a drink after just 5 minutes.

"The way I stood in there packing my suitcase. Only, my mind wasn't on the suitcase. It wasn't on the weekend. Nor was it on the shirts I was putting in the suitcase, either. My mind was hanging outside the window. It was suspended
just about 18 inches below."

Couldn't have said it better myself, especially if you add "Sunset" and "Witness" to that list :)

I hadn't even heard of this before the new Masters of Cinema Blu-ray, but thank goodness for them because it really is superb. Ray Milland is astounding. And the BD is excellent too, gorgeous PQ and packed to bursting with special features.

Definitely a forgotten classic.
