It's an entertaining movie, but the second act felt a bit lackluster compared to the first. Connery and Caine are fine in their roles and it's not hard to see why both of them claim they enjoyed making this movie more than any other.

One of the greatest classic adventure movies of the 70ies. Great story, direction and terrific pairing of Connery and Caine. Seen the movie countless times and always fun.

Tedious, meandering and most of all entirely predictable. I enjoy watching movies with sympathetic characters because they make me invested in the plot, they give me someone to care about, to identify with or root for. This movie starred two great actors as two dislikable, selfish pricks which made me not care at all what happened to either of them. Also, it has a framing story (starring Christopher Plummer) which does nothing except give away the entire last act (for anyone able to put two and two together). This kind of storytelling is just plain boring.

Goodness, this film hasn't aged well -- not that all of history's cultural products have to adhere to a particular moral code, but the sheer orientalism and smarmy indulgence of white supremacy on display in this flick feels pretty darn stupid. Sean Connery the spousal abuser and Michael Caine the Tory voter seem right in their element in this tale of two imperialist adventurers journeying to a fantasy-land of silly/primitive/idiotic non-Europeans ripe for colonial misrule.
