I don't recall any other movie that so effectively reminded me that a great movie is more than just having a stellar cast, excellent plotting, and philosophical weight, it's also a "planets aligning" kind of situation when the movie was released at just the right time. That's what the original Matrix was back in '99, a perfect movie for a perfect time. That kind of magic can't be recaptured, and so sequels get judged rather harshly. This one was far too meta for my taste, even becoming almost exhausting. The technology had to evolve in order to make the worldbuilding more relevant but with so much of that taking up space it just makes the whole vehicle feel lackluster.

Bad boring unnecessary sequel. It's fun to see Neo and Trinity again but this movie is just full of mumbo jumbo and lacking in tension. It just goes on and on and on.

...this is one of those movies you can't look away from, wish you'd never seen and makes you wonder if the world truly did end in 2012 and we're living in some alternate reality. I know there will be YouTube videos and podcasts analyzing how tongue in cheek the whole thing is and how it's meta this and deconstructed that and...nope, still absolutely awful from start to whatever the hell happened by the end.

It's the same old song, but with some new orchestration. And if you get down for it you will taste the piss.

Started really strong and by the end it's hilariously bad. I would recommend a watch, but it's neither completely wonderful must-see nor is it terrible, write-it-off. A conundrum. Better than the sequels.

I had a chuckle over this quote at the very beginning: "I'm sure you can understand why our beloved parent company, Warner Bros., has decided to make a sequel to the trilogy. They informed me they're gonna do it with or without us."

From then on I tried to approach it with a sense of humour and basically just pretended it's fanfiction.

I really don't get how the action could be so terrible in a Matrix movie. There isn't a fight scene that I'd rank in the top 20 of the franchise, which is really unforgivable.

I mostly liked everything about the story and found it a worthwhile continuation of the original movies, with some decent enough character development and technological evolution. One major plus is it actually captured a bit of the first movie's disorienting "wtf is reality" that 2&3 really missed on.

But, the entire movie, I kept waiting for any fight scene that captured any of the magic of the original three. Instead, it was just nonstop clumsy shakeycam brawls.

If you don't go into this movie expecting to feel exactly how Matrix made you feel, chances are that you'll have way more fun!

Yes, all of the criticism directed towards Resurections is true: it's an unnecessary, meta sequel that will never hold up to the original trilogy.
But personally, thats why I loved it so much! Contrary to what people seem to think, I believe Lana was fully aware of what kind of movie she was making, and said "fuck it let's just have fun with it" (or at least that's what it felt like).
Sure it's VERY on the nose, but was Matrix ever known for it's subtlety?

My recommendation: no need to lower your expectations, just push them aside completely and let yourself get carried by the movie!

almost everything in this is bad, but the worst is that cover of wake up. the video of sleeping awake by p.o.d is better than this film.

I really liked it. It has silly moments, but to me The Matrix has always been somewhat silly. "Oh but in 1999 this movie was edgy and and cool", well, guess what, so was American Beauty, and now it's the butt of many jokes.

I think that all of the snarky remarks and comic relief moments during tense situations is just following a trend in recent movies.

The most important thing, in my opinion, was the implication that spoiler, in contrast with the original trilogy, in which spoiler. It's mind-blowing and a very depressing asessment of society today.

I will agree, however, that Kujaku, spoiler made this movie borderline comedic. Wouldn't say this should discourage anyone from seeing it though.

I remember seeing the Matrix in the cinema as a young kid and it blew my mind. It revolutionise special effects and it was backed it a solid storyline. And that sadly is something that Resurrection does not have. Hell, half of the movie seems to just be footage from the first three movies, one quarter is millennial characters moaning about millennial issues, and one quarter seems to be new, albeit pointless, content.

I can see why Hugo, after reading the script, turned down the chance to reprise his Agent Smith role. I would have done the same if I’d have read the script too. And casting Neil Patrick Harris as a villain? He was so miscast that he was comically bad; I genuinely felt embarrassed for him and his performance. Keanu too, sadly, put it a terrible performance, arguable the worst of his career, and Carrie-Anne Moss was clearly just walking in her performance. Jessica Henwick seemed to be about the only one who could be bothered to act in this movie but sadly her storyline was just as dull as the rest of the movie.

Morpheus once said that unfortunately no-one can be told what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself. Well I’m telling you now that you do not need to see the movie to know that it’s bad. Sometimes you should just leave sleeping dogs lie.
