Just to support dombrewer..
The sexiness portrayed was not much to my taste .. but it came over very well, as did the character of ms Page.. wonderfully portrayed.
And I totally agree with domb's comment about how sex is seen as much worse than violence on the screen... 10 years 2 months ago -

Was quite surprised how good this was given the low IMDB score - but anything remotely "sexy" or unusual in that respect often falls foul of prudish attitudes... funny that extremely violent movies don't get the same reaction (or the same degree of censorship in America). Anyway, Gretchen Mol is brilliant in this, as well as extremely beautiful, and the period setting is accurately recreated. I was particularly taken with the questions obliquely raised about modern parallels with readily available pornography of the hardest variety one click away when Bettie's rather tame, rather charming "nudie" images were at one time considered the highest degradation and contributing to the decline of society. Interesting times, fascinating woman, very good film. 12 years 2 months ago
