Started incredibly strong and then became progressively more straightforward as it barrelled along. Excellent direction and cinematography 100% worthy of Oscar success - the main protagonists are first class too however I felt Will Poulter's character had more potential than the role delivered - I was almost expecting him to show up at the very end...

I agree with some earlier comments on the similarities to Malick's work - just more action on show here!

Absolutely amazing cinematography and wonderful soundtrack. The film totally captivates you, and the fact that it was shot in all natural daylight - I tip my hat to you, sir.

Great performance as always by Leo and Hardy, though I doubt Leo will get an Oscar for this.

Leonardo DiCaprio and the Quest for All the Oscars

This was beautiful but goddamn did it feel like it was 17 hours long. That's not necessarily a criticism as it was entirely intentional and honestly every frame of Emmanuel Lubezki's work deserves extra attention (I would not be surprised if he ends up being the first three consecutive Oscar winner). Having read the book, every single change is for the better, including the addition of Glass' son. The only trouble I'm having is determining who had the better performance, Tom Hardy or Leo. Hardy really sold the selfish antagonist while Leo starred in a very special episode of Fear Factor.

Saw this in cinemas as part of a Screen Unseen. This is an excellent look at survival with stunning cinematography, directing and acting. While a good 20 minutes could have been cut, and the CGI done a lot better, when it works it works fantastically. Very gripping and gritty, the action scenes in particular are thrilling.

Wow, Leo is really a superhuman here... not sure if i am 100% convinced,
but hey: at least those awful Keanu Reeves and Adrien Brody were not cast.

The director needs updating to 'Alejandro González Iñárritu' rather than 'Alejandro G. Iñárritu' as his other films are all listed under the former.

You have movies with bloody scenes so exaggerated that it actually becomes laughable. Take for example "The hateful Eight". Liters of blood spatter around in this film. It's not really meant to be funny but it isn't shocking either after a while. The key moment in "The Revenant" however, is so incredibly realistic and bloody painful to behold. A dashing exploit of CGI and choreography. The interplay between DiCaprio and the computer animated bear had to be meticulously coordinated. I think this required some scrupulous work, resulting in an impressive battle scene. Had it been a real-life, trained bear, I'd give this bear an Oscar.

Now Leonardo DiCaprio snatched the coveted statuette away from the bear. In my opinion Leo deserved it, but not specifically for this film. I have no doubt that the circumstances this film was made in, must have been heavy and mostly inhuman. The extreme cold in the icy landscape over there in the far north and the difficult primitive conditions of life for these trappers weren't faked images. But for DiCaprio there wasn't much acting involved during the largest part of the film. Mostly it was just groaning with a lot of splashing spittle. Although he did this in a very convincing way. His facial expression showed his feelings. No need for heaps of words. So he's not a chatterbox as in "The Wolf of Wall Street". That's the movie he deserved an Oscar for, in my opinion.

"The Revenant" is the ultimate survival film. A brilliant film about the struggle between man and nature. A beautiful film, full of fascinating images, that slowly takes the form of a revenge movie. The revenge Hugh Glass wants, is the thread running through this film. A film about a profound willpower and perseverance. A survival film that easily surpasses essentially all other similar films. The scene with the horse is pretty hallucinating and a pinnacle of inventiveness when it comes to survival skills. This film being based on a true story, makes it all the more impressive. In my opinion this film can be added to the list of other legendary films.

The way wilderness captured on camera is nothing short of *brilliant*. One of the best movies of 2015. I will give it 8/10.

Overall a very solid film from Iñárritu. Absolutely loved the continuous wide angle cinematography - almost made you feel like you were right there besides the characters.

Otherworldly, gritty and stunning photography/cinematography/direction...

Almost all of the scene films left you speechless, your jaw hanging, in awe and wonder...

While the film's weakest point is probably the plot, it's also completely irrelevant, cause that's exactly the point. The whole film centers around survival after all, and survival is hard and raw indeed. Couldn't be filmed any better for it's theme.

Even tough it some places got a little bit to artsy for my personal taste, I couldn't help but admire and respect the craft and the vision by iñárritu. It is without question one of the most raw and innovative films I have seen in a very long time.
