I loved this movie as a kid, and recently bought it to watch again. I feared it would not be as entertaining but to my pleasure it was still absolutely wonderful. Genuinely funny, beautiful art and very likable characters. One of my favorite non-Disney animations.

Given the title of this movie, I was surprised how early in it they actually get to El Dorado. This is really more about just saving El Dorado. The two main characters are fun, but their arcs are a bit weak and feel unfinished. Villian is forgettable, most side characters are underdeveloped. It does look great and the movie is very watchable because of that, as well as the fact that the characters are all at least fun to watch.

It does end very suddenly though with no real climax.

It's no wonder that this is titled "The Road To El Dorado", it is very much a Hope/Crosby picture. The plot was intellectually a step higher than I expected--Kline and Branagh do a pretty good job here. Weird that only one of the Elton John/Tim Rice songs are actually performed by the principals--not as memorable as The Lion King by any stretch, but serviceable.

Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh and Rosie Perez are terrific as a trio of grifters looking to con the Aztecs out of their gold in The Road to El Dorado, one of the better Dreamworks animated movies, and pitched a little older than these things usually are, with the threat of real violence and even some not-at-all-hard-to-catch sexual innuendo. And that's fine. I love con men types, and Kline & Branagh are very funny as Spanish rogues Tulio & Miguel, and Perez is more than a match for them and for a drawring, impossibly sexy. The animal sidekicks are fun (so the makers of Tangled totally ripped this off, right?). Aztec culture is brought to life well, using period art as inspiration, and with a certain humor and humanity. The action sequences are exciting. The songs are good if not entirely memorable. The animation, especially on the character acting, is great. It more or less had me at hola ;-).

We're always quick to praise a story that shows how a friendship is formed, but it is also a difficult thing to show a friendship in its prime and have us believe it wholeheartedly. Road to Eldorado achieves this to the 'nth degree, animating possibly the most believable odd couple of my youth. Putting aside the moral ambiguity of the plot, this movie is worth a watch for this friendship alone.

When I was 7 & my sister was 4, we hired it from the video store & kept it for a month. Somehow we didn't get fined.
