I don't normally say this as I usually find it quite snooty-sounding, but...I think some of the commenters have missed the point of the film.

Walter longed to have an adventure. To be a hero. To fall in love. He didn't have the courage or the ambition to do these things, so instead he imagined them. His daydreams got him through the day.
The movie follows spoiler Sure, it's not the most realistic film, but it has so much heart.

A beautiful film with a great cast, incredible visuals and a fantastic soundtrack. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Beautiful visuals in this movie, they're fantastic the soundtrack is great as well. Ben Stiller was good in the movie, the story interesting, is not a great, great adventure but it satisfatory enough to enjoy it.

Glad I saw this in theaters--had not planned on it, but another film was sold out.

Fantastic visuals, fun story, great soundtrack. Normally dislike Stiller, but he was not bad here, and Wiig is her usual blend of awkwardly hilarious charm. (If you're a Wiig fan you will enjoy this movie; if not, you won't.)

I also enjoyed the mixing of genres; I found it refreshing rather than, as so many critics found it, a confused attempt at directing.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty hits the nail on its message's head perhaps a bit strongly, but it's one we call all appreciate: Live life, guys. So it's about this shy, retiring guy who works at Life Magazine and who, seeking love and a missing photograph meant for Life's last ever cover, goes from dreamer to doer. Ben Stiller stars and directs, and gives the film a sharp photographic look, at least initially, adding movement and color as Walter starts to really live. It looks gorgeous and is definitely a feel-good film, with lots of locations and action worthy of the magazine whose aesthetic is emulated. It's not flawless, however. Seeing as the first act includes a lot of Walter's fantasies, it becomes difficult to trust the film maker when the adventure becomes real, because that adventure itself is somewhat heightened. A more cynical viewer may be in his or her rights to refuse suspension of disbelief, though the clues to the "reality" are there. But I, for one, bought into it. By turns charming, funny and touching.

Surprisingly fun and entertaining. Manage your expectations (it is a Ben Stiller movie) and you won't be disapointed.

This movie vacillates between moments of utter beauty and brilliance and moments of shear blandness. I get what Stiller was going for, but the jokes inside the bland generally fall flat. The adventure is fabulous but comes to a crashing halt midway through. A tighter script would have made this great.

Normally a fan of Stiller, so I was looking forward to this one - God dammit I'm disappointed. So much unfinished business, which means a lot of plot holes. It feels like Stiller can't decide whether to make a Hollywood or an indie so it just becomes this weird, deformed hybrid, and fails completely.
Went down like this I imagine:
Stiller got a pile of money > wanted to experiment and to be indie > forgot Hollywood expectations > went rogue and spent the money on whatever the f..k he could imagine > remembered Hollywood expectations > discovered he's out of cash > felt producer pressure > mixed everything together while blindfolded > Movie done

Starts off realistically (such action scenes would only be plausible in our imagination) but the adventure that follows would have made more sense in his dreams and then it ends in cliché.

Very American-style, but i enjoyed it anyway - because of positivity dose.
Sean Penn great as always, and OST was not bad as well.

A very sweet, light-hearted and feelgood story. An easy watch. But when you break it down it is riddled with plot holes, and cliches. Does that really matter? I find that the film still is highly enjoyable. A lot of very good spectacle from Iceland, Greenland and the Himalayas. Makes you want to see the world. Some good comedy moments in there. All in all a solid and enjoyable movie.
