More importantly than illustrating the ceremonies of electing a new Pope, this movie illuminates the self-doubts, inner turmoil, human feelings and struggle to apply faith to everyday living that men of the highest order of the Catholic church experience. Very good movie. 11 years 1 month ago

I appreciated the way that much of the pomp and circumstance of the Vatican was handled and the plot of Quinn's ascendancy to the Pontificate was by far the most interesting of the three in the movie. The David Janssen thing with the wife...seems to me that was added for those who would not be interested in a movie about the Vatican, in which case I would ask...why are you watching the movie?! The final plot line, that of the starving Chinese nation and their crazed leader intent on seizing Southeast Asia, was the most absurd of the bunch and the ending seemed like capitulation rather than beneficence.

For me I wished that Quinn had a better script to work with and I felt like the movie ended with an hour and a half to go...
