There's something so gloriously pathetic about our protagonist, Julie. She's so blithely unaware of her privilege, including her loser boyfriend and his misgivings. She reminds of an NYU film school graduate - floating away in her dreams of being a film director without the self-advocacy and commitment to work towards those dreams.
I know that sounds bitter, but it's one of the reasons this is a rewarding film for me to watch.
Ps - With all the Hitchcock references, I imagine this film a version of a Hitchcock film where the film is from the side-chick actress' point of view.
Well not really a masterpiece but very accurate in showing the life of a privileged person trying to escape her artifical environment. It is more Bresson than Hitchcock.
My main impression while watching this film is that Joanna Hogg strikes me as a very dull person. The characters, dialogue, etc. in this film are all incredibly bland. There is some interesting camera work, but nothing that hasn't been an established tool in the arsenal of European arthouse filmmakers for decades.

Wow, just wow. That was so booring. The high praise must be the film school connection, but for me it added nothing.elcid

My soul hadn't vomited like this in so long. Do not recommend. Possibly the worst movie I've seen all year.Adrian B AWESOME
Best film of 2019 so far.
