Given that The Thin Man is such a short movie, a pretty good portion of its run time is spent on plot mechanics. The first sequel (the only one I've yet seen) is more consistently amusing; I think by that time the filmmakers knew what magic they had with the Nick and Nora Charles dynamic and exploited it more fully. But this may be the better overall film, despite some early-sound-film creakiness.
Could've used 15 more minutes or so to properly deliver all the characters in the first third of the movie. I felt they were all kinda rushed in there.
The main appeal of this movie is still the charisma and chemistry of the 2 leads. Enjoyed it, will probably check out the sequels too.
The Thin Man, the original Nick and Nora movie, starring William Powell and Myrna Loy in the roles (they have a naturally chemical romance), is more comedy than it is film noir (despite title and subject matter), and has such boisterous appeal, you might just want to chug their other Thin Man films. They spend most of the film drunk and trying to avoid detective work, delivering crisp banter and being charming as all get-out while trapped in a convoluted mystery of Big Lebowski-like proportions. Frankly, the reveal at the end is somewhat anti-climactic. But it's not about that. Watch it for the farcical sequences, like the cocktail party where all the suspects show up in view of unscrupulous journalists, or the bit with the martinis, or the amusing dog, or how Nick makes sure Nora doesn't get shot in their bedroom! 1934 seems very early to give mystery tropes these twists, but there you have it.
The movie can be a little rough around the edges in term of the final product lacking the extra polish it needs, but this is definitely one of the better films that came from this period.
Great movie, a real pleasure to watch. I really love movies that use a murder mystery as a Macguffin in order to showcase actors, relationships, and dialogue. William Powell and Myrna Loy are one of the greatest couples in cinematic history.
