Terrence Malick tells quite an incredible story, but if you are expecting a lowest common denominator Michael Bay script to be spoonfed to you, then go watch Transformers 3 or Mr. Popper's Penguins.

This is arguably the best film I have ever seen in terms of visual storytelling. The camerawork in this film is up there with many of the most masterfully shot films in history. And this film really captures what it is like to be alive, to grow up as a child, and to just even experience the things that are around you through a childlike lens of discovery.

This is not a film for everyone, but if you just let your guard down and get rid of your preconceptions of what you think a film should be, you will have quite the journey. Films like this are the reason many people become directors in the first place.

Absolutely brilliant. Profound and beautiful, this film deserves to win best director, picture and cinematography(at the very least) in next years oscars. Alas knowing the academy it won't win a single award...

What a fascinating film. Probably the most nostalgic film I have ever seen.

challenging piece well well worth seeing. it hasn't had quite the impact on me as others on here but i thought it was miraculous filmmaking and surpasses mere beauty.
the performances of all the cast are staggeringly real and ever changing. it is one i want to see again in a years time and i reckon it'll have a stronger impact even

Too monotonous and one-note for me. Also, the whispering narration was a little irritating for me.

Yeah, unnecessary whispering has always been aggravating for me, too. I learned that with Ang Lee's Hulk. This was an unbelievably beautiful film though, despite the fact that the script evaporated into thing air and it was 30 minutes too long.

Just wonderful - with minor reservations - but Malick is a phenomenal director. He manages to make the epic seem personal and universal specific. The evocation of childhood and memory was beautiful and all the performances, particularly the children, were exceptional. Even though the narrative was non-existent I was still incredibly moved at the end. A great, challenging work of art, no question.

Absolutely hated it. As an aspiring screenwriter, I was actually offended by how atrocious the script was. There was no narrative, no dialogue. I'm all for postmodern conventions of cinema, but you can NEVER break fundamental rules of creating a movie such as having a freaking PLOT. The movie was not about anything. I'm usually very into this kind of existential stuff, but this was so pretentious and obnoxious. Tried way too desperately to be deep and meaningful and scarified any iota of plot, believability, credibility and not to mention entertainment in the process. Awful. Just awful. What a total waste of Sean Penn as well. He had what, two lines? Jesus.

On the positive aside, the visuals were stunning. Whoever played the wife was a standout with the unremarkable material she was given. And that's about it.

Mesmerizing. I can't remember the last time a film has had this effect on me: I walked around with a big grin on my face for days, newly reminded of the miracles of everyday life. Then again, when was the last time a film sought to be about everything in life.

First hour was some of the most gorgeous visuals I've ever seen. Then Malick overlabours his point. I understand what he was trying to do, and directly experienced his visual sense is bar none, but just like in The New World, he doesn't marry it to a deeper narrative. Deeply frustrating, as this could have been the modern 2001, as it stands, this is a film I HIGHLY respect but can't totally recommend. 3/5

Great shots, very well made.

And boring, too.

I agree with other commentators: could have been the modern 2001, but sadly it's overblown to the point of tedium and will likely see little public fame. Still, I think it's great. Definitely watch it on the big screen before you lose the chance!
