Btful cinematography... but all the way boring and all the cycle of life has been done. more the two long hours..george4mon
i thought pitts performance was better in this than moneyball the film it's self was well shot but boringMDMaster
I actually find the story of the father that, like God, makes mistakes, fascinating and wished the movie would have just focused on that, instead of adding visual pretentiousness, not to mention that insignificant ending. And I mean insignificant as "it did not bring closure to the story". It is by all of means very well shot and directed, but I'm not sure I will ever watch it again.mandapuspi
I might not be a film snob. To me it's just a thought-provoking philosophy wrapped in a beautiful cinematography. Other than that I sense anxiety. None of this will stuck in my head as other great films had. I must say it's a great film, but i didn't enjoy watching it. At all.Admiral Softy
In true Malick fashion, theres just too much damned whispering of overly contemplative introspection. After a while it just becomes laughable that all these characters, regardless of age, continue to wax on in their inner voices with the same semi-coherent nature vs. grace jargon.Besides that, this movie definitely showcases some exquisite visuals. Just some really great camera work and the creation sequence is full of breathtaking imagery. The heavy mixing of sounds from nature and a classical / holy church style soundtrack really compliment those visuals nicely.

Dull, pretentious, self-absorbed rubbish. The fragmented non-linear stuff did not work. I think Malick should have a chat with Tarantino to sort that one out. Nothing of interest happens at any stage and he even manages to make the beginning of the universe boring: which is a hell of an achievement, although not one that Malick will put up with his Palme d'Or.

More of a visual poem in some ways than a storytelling film, "The Tree of Life" is a collection of scenes or memories from the life of a man centred on his childhood in Texas. It is not easy to watch, but easy to appreciate for the achievement in filmmaking that it is.Malick's use of odd angles, inventive framing and long stretches of imaginative historical recollection (including the infamous "creation of the universe" and "dinosaur" sequences) make this a film to be appreciated intellectually by some and emotionally by others. (I fall into the former category.) The way the film tells the story and how it is framed with a larger story told from the future, the film almost seems to take place during the span of an elevator ride (almost like the supposedly un-filmable novel "The Mezzanine").
There is no real trick to this movie, no hidden message. It is what it is and it makes its message clear. It's message is presented strongly in the way strong messages are presented in most films - through repetition. That message is simple: Love. Life is short. We all live, we all die. Enjoy what you can while being a good person. Things will work out best that way. Despite its length and floating free-form narrative, who can argue with the film's message?
Deserving of its win at Cannes and Oscar Best Picture nomination, "The Tree of Life" is a film that will reveal different things to you in different phases of life. Enjoy it while you can.

Beautiful, but oh so boring.kayjay027
When you watch a film and it makes you mull over it for hours on end trying to decipher its beauty, and still cannot find an exact answer, you know the movie influenced you. Hunter McCrackren was phenomenal and so were all the others. Unfortunately, I would have skipped the fifteen minute nature video but then again it wouldn't have been as visually sound.blisot
worst movie ever madedaisyaday
