I have no idea if I like this movie or not....ligiacorrea
I think this movie can't be taken as good or bad cause the author is not trying to please anyone and easily talk about a determined subject. He chose a language - basically music and image - to treat the questions that mattered to him and he wanted to expose. For me, the movie talks about God, evolution, life in many ways, greatness, smallness, parental love, and many other things, which are the aspects that have touched me the most, that I had some identification with. And because of that I thought it was dense, even with almost no dialogue. I don't see it as pretencious movie, but as a simple, delicate, extremely beautiful and touching work of art.Suzanne
I'm glad I went to see this to the cinema, because I probably wouldn't sit trough it on a computer screen. It was way too long, but I still loved every minute. Mallick worked on the script for over 30 years or so and it deserves to be called his masterpiece. The actors were also amazing.
Only one thing freaked me out - dinosaurs?!:D

I'm not sure Mallick has accomplished the mission of making a movie about the impact of losing a brother and a son. But, IF he failed, it is just because it must be so hard that it seems impossible to me.Despite the eventual success or failure: The Tree of Life is an amazing movie.

I agree with other commentators: could have been the modern 2001, but sadly it's overblown to the point of tedium and will likely see little public fame. Still, I think it's great. Definitely watch it on the big screen before you lose the chance!Travis_Bickle
Great shots, very well made. And boring, too.

Stunning movie. I liked it. It has it's problems but still well worth the watch.Scratch47
First hour was some of the most gorgeous visuals I've ever seen. Then Malick overlabours his point. I understand what he was trying to do, and directly experienced his visual sense is bar none, but just like in The New World, he doesn't marry it to a deeper narrative. Deeply frustrating, as this could have been the modern 2001, as it stands, this is a film I HIGHLY respect but can't totally recommend. 3/5caley
Mesmerizing. I can't remember the last time a film has had this effect on me: I walked around with a big grin on my face for days, newly reminded of the miracles of everyday life. Then again, when was the last time a film sought to be about everything in life.Our_Young_Protagonist
lol'd so hard at the below comment.violetion
Absolutely hated it. As an aspiring screenwriter, I was actually offended by how atrocious the script was. There was no narrative, no dialogue. I'm all for postmodern conventions of cinema, but you can NEVER break fundamental rules of creating a movie such as having a freaking PLOT. The movie was not about anything. I'm usually very into this kind of existential stuff, but this was so pretentious and obnoxious. Tried way too desperately to be deep and meaningful and scarified any iota of plot, believability, credibility and not to mention entertainment in the process. Awful. Just awful. What a total waste of Sean Penn as well. He had what, two lines? Jesus. On the positive aside, the visuals were stunning. Whoever played the wife was a standout with the unremarkable material she was given. And that's about it.

Just wonderful - with minor reservations - but Malick is a phenomenal director. He manages to make the epic seem personal and universal specific. The evocation of childhood and memory was beautiful and all the performances, particularly the children, were exceptional. Even though the narrative was non-existent I was still incredibly moved at the end. A great, challenging work of art, no question.Jumping Elephant
Yeah, unnecessary whispering has always been aggravating for me, too. I learned that with Ang Lee's Hulk. This was an unbelievably beautiful film though, despite the fact that the script evaporated into thing air and it was 30 minutes too long.MaxBG
Too monotonous and one-note for me. Also, the whispering narration was a little irritating for me.Showing items 76 – 90 of 109
