Either, something this contemporary should never go mainstream, or it just f***ed up being contemporary ^ ^aniforprez
icheckmovies needs to make an award specifically for people who sat through this. dull, utterly boring i actually slept at one point and had to watch it again the next day. if this was meant to convey some meaning or philosophical message, it was lost somewhere in the overly long 2:30 hours that this film tries its best to fill with breathtaking albeit meaningless visuals in the first half, and more meaningless whispered drivel and random shots of random scenes in a random person's life.and for the life of me i don't know what sean penn's role was in this thing. i do NOT recommend to anyone but pretentious film buffs. what a waste of money and time. how did the people at cannes sit through this in the theatre? i couldn't stand it at home!

@aniforprez: At one point in your cinematic journey, you will likely come to realize that each and everyone one of us, the people of the world, critics, peers, mere film lovers, ANYONE is different. The mere fact that you would only recommend this to "pretentious film buffs" tells me you are not yet ready to understand my previous statement. The fact that you didn't like this film does not make you stupid. I understand many people who watch this film and don't like it, immediately will want to justify to themselves and others, that they are not stupid, and therefore labels The Tree of Life as "pretentious" and "boring". "Pretentious" of course being used as a word to describe actions or images that seemingly have no meaning and will not have any meaning upon further examination. What does this mean? Well, it doesn't mean anything. The word is useless.
But my point is: You are not stupid for not understanding, or not liking this film. We all experience joy from different things. Most film viewers attribute arbitrary values to signify the level of importance of any given film. I myself gave The Tree of Life 10/10 and proclaimed it was the greatest film I ever saw. Why did I do that? Well, what the hell do you care... Watching a film is a personal and individual experience. Don't think that it is anything but that.

@Nuked: I could not agree more. Nuf said.aniforprez
@Nuked thanks for your pretentious, long, boring and ultimately meaningless comment. it was very much like the movie itself.at some point in your long cinematic journey you have obviously realised everyone is different. the very fact that you wanted to point this out to me has merely proven in my eyes that you're a pretentious douche who has no respect for criticisms of this piece of shit that somehow found its way into screens. you have taken this so far as to call a fellow critic "a fucking idiot". well i have my opinion and many share this with me.
i never called the FILM pretentious. i have called people like you pretentious. people like you who see great meaning in art devoid of any talent, in "masterpieces" that are devoid of any sense. people like you who write long, rambling comments that ultimately make no sense and convey no message. you call me "not stupid" but try very hard not to actually call me stupid. you call it a personal experience but reject mine.
i respect you for your varied experiences in films (3000 is no small number) but when you come here and proceed to insult other critics, you strip yourself of all dignity and respect. i am ashamed of your behaviour.

@aniforprez: There is absolutely nothing pretentious about my meaningless comment, and I am beginning to think you do not know the meaning of that word.It is okay for you to disagree with me. In fact I wasn't standing up for this movie, I was standing up for your right to not like this movie. But you didn't express your dislikeness in a very mature manner (recommending it only to pretentious film buffs, etc.) and of course I felt I had to respond to that as well.
I called that guy a "fucking idiot" because he expressed his opinion in a way that spoke volumes about his lack of knowledge of movies. I believe he was in fact pretentious. Perhaps calling him a "fucking idiot" speaks volumes about me as well. But I thoroughly regret the comment, and if it had happened today, I would have expressed myself in a much more constructive manner, much like I did with you.
I never rejected your personal experience, in fact, as I mentioned earlier, I very much give you all the right to have that personal experience, whether I disagree with you or not. You should read my previous reply to you, and read it with an open mind. I think you will find that you completely misunderstood my intentions.

I have to say, I thought this was quite a moving film. I'm not sure about some of the moralisms in the movie - I think they are a bit idealistic, but it made me think about some aspects of my own childhood, so for me I found it a worthwhile watch.Skyscore

the cinematography is breathtaking , beautiful script though it's not much .. it took some serious thinking till I realized what is it about , deep philosophy .. into the meaning of one's being and a detailed aspect on life .. do I recommend it , absolutely no..Marovan
The ending was just painful for me. I cannot stand the style at all.Midfreewayfox
Visually stunning but still not my genre at all.So slow and suffocating.
