Terence Malick's remorse at his desk: "Next time, try to film essential stuff, just the essential, not my common weird sh*t".Read more in French on La Saveur des goƻts amers.

@Nuked: I could not agree more. Nuf said.BeasleyOnFilm
Dull, pretentious, self-absorbed rubbish. The fragmented non-linear stuff did not work. I think Malick should have a chat with Tarantino to sort that one out. Nothing of interest happens at any stage and he even manages to make the beginning of the universe boring: which is a hell of an achievement, although not one that Malick will put up with his Palme d'Or.

Beautiful, but oh so boring.melte
This picture is a good imitation of great films. It contains many elements of exceptional movies, and most notably is visually inspired. The quality and diversity of images is striking. Yet it lacks something. It has solid acting, but no characters that really compel; it has tense moments, but no space for humour. The structure of the film is unique but disengaging. I can certainly see why it received polarizing responses.roobin_22

Beautiful like no other.Suzanne
I'm glad I went to see this to the cinema, because I probably wouldn't sit trough it on a computer screen. It was way too long, but I still loved every minute. Mallick worked on the script for over 30 years or so and it deserves to be called his masterpiece. The actors were also amazing.
Only one thing freaked me out - dinosaurs?!:D

I agree with other commentators: could have been the modern 2001, but sadly it's overblown to the point of tedium and will likely see little public fame. Still, I think it's great. Definitely watch it on the big screen before you lose the chance!Our_Young_Protagonist
lol'd so hard at the below comment.violetion
Absolutely hated it. As an aspiring screenwriter, I was actually offended by how atrocious the script was. There was no narrative, no dialogue. I'm all for postmodern conventions of cinema, but you can NEVER break fundamental rules of creating a movie such as having a freaking PLOT. The movie was not about anything. I'm usually very into this kind of existential stuff, but this was so pretentious and obnoxious. Tried way too desperately to be deep and meaningful and scarified any iota of plot, believability, credibility and not to mention entertainment in the process. Awful. Just awful. What a total waste of Sean Penn as well. He had what, two lines? Jesus. On the positive aside, the visuals were stunning. Whoever played the wife was a standout with the unremarkable material she was given. And that's about it.

Yeah, unnecessary whispering has always been aggravating for me, too. I learned that with Ang Lee's Hulk. This was an unbelievably beautiful film though, despite the fact that the script evaporated into thing air and it was 30 minutes too long.MaxBG
Too monotonous and one-note for me. Also, the whispering narration was a little irritating for me.akuma587
Terrence Malick tells quite an incredible story, but if you are expecting a lowest common denominator Michael Bay script to be spoonfed to you, then go watch Transformers 3 or Mr. Popper's Penguins. This is arguably the best film I have ever seen in terms of visual storytelling. The camerawork in this film is up there with many of the most masterfully shot films in history. And this film really captures what it is like to be alive, to grow up as a child, and to just even experience the things that are around you through a childlike lens of discovery.
This is not a film for everyone, but if you just let your guard down and get rid of your preconceptions of what you think a film should be, you will have quite the journey. Films like this are the reason many people become directors in the first place.

I'm also one of the haters. I feel the same as I did with 2001: A Space Odyssey. This movie is like looking at a vague modern art painting for two and a half hours, while you're trying to find out what the painting is supposed to resemble. I almost fell asleep while watching this. Definitely not my kind of movie.Showing items 76 – 90 of 109
