I lost a bet and had to watch this, so I was expecting a pretty hard slog. This really surpassed my expectations though. Let's just say I wish you could dislike something twice.
Why are people defending this so vigorously? This is speaking from a big Shyamalan fan. The Sixth Sense is one of my all-time favorites. Unbreakable, Signs, Split, and The Visit are great. The rest are... pretty terrible.
But really? This twist ending is absolutely utterly ridiculous. In no way is it convincing at all. The suspense built up over the first half was actually kind of gripping. Then it melted away faster than ice cream on a hot summer day. Awful. I expected much better.
I remember hoping people would stop looking for the twists in M. Night Shyamalan's movies soon because they were far better than those simple end twists. The Village turns out to be rather touching and has great moments of suspense and mystery.
A very impressive film in some ways and surprisingly subtle for Shyamalan - maybe detrimentally so as kept looking for bigger twists than were actually delivered. Although I enjoyed it, there are several big flaws that stopped this from being a great film for me. First of all, I didn’t buy the logic of the whole situation - I mean they really hadn’t thought about what to do when people got sick? But more problematically, the use of disabled characters is quite troubling and manipulative at times, used entirely for genre purposes in a way that is at times quite uncomfortable, particularly in regards to a big reveal that I won’t spoil here.
That said, The filmmaking itself is some of Shyamalan’s best; it has atmosphere, rhythm and strong performances.
Well, I guess the movie is fine. From the discussions, I expected it to be scary. DONT expect that, it's more of the drama/mystery-ish kind.
Felt like a joke while I was watching it, probably because I expected something else, but it feels like it has an ok story when I look back at it.

well, this movie surprised me. i believed it was an horror movie till the 3/4 of its lenght, but the final is revealing and a pleasant surprise, maybe cause i always dreamed about creating a similar project.. discovering that the story is placed in our days is surprising, almost for me.
i really liked it. maybe it's not a 10/10, but is absolutely worth watching. one of my best icm reccomendations.

Pretty terrible. Roger Deakins' work is gorgeous as usual, but the film is utter tripe.imokaylarry

One of my favorite films and, IMO, better than anything that Shyamalan has done. Here's an entry I wrote about it on my blog.
