A fantastic comedy. The DVD commentary (as performed in character by the actors) is almost as hilarious as the film itself.

Show of hands. Who, when they first saw This Is Spinal Tap, thought it was a real documentary about a real band they'd never heard of? At least for a little while? At what point did you realize? I think that happened to me back in those days when maybe I didn't know all the actors on sight. Because the King of All Mockumentaries entirely nails the look and feel of what it is parodying, right down to the treatment of old video from the fictional band's previous incarnations and the way the live shows are filmed. A lot of the comedy percolates in the background and you might miss it on first watch (Spinal Pap, ha!), and I mean, the songs are bad, but no worse than what was on the radio in the early 1980s (or indeed, at any time in radio history). As Spinal Tap gets more and more humiliated, that it is a comedy (and not an accidental one) becomes more apparent, but it shows its heart by the end, so it works as a realistic story too. Still the mockumentary against which all others are measured.

I guess you had to be there. I felt like I was on the outside of a huge inside joke. Not very funny. I could see the mockery of certain types but it wasn't enough for me to rate this movie high at all.

As a musician, I enjoy this film more. It is about ego, stupidity, creativity and bad management - just like the real music 'industry'. I will always be grateful it got made. I don't feel that way about too many others.

Tuna. No bones.

Tried to watch this around a year ago, stopped after 3 minutes. After seeing this now, I really understand why it has it's status. Maybe not cryin out loud funny, but I enjoyed it, I really enjoyed it.
