great script and atmosphere. not a western in the traditional entertaining sense but strong characters keep this engaging. incredible performance from the mother (beulah bondi) and some impressive photography of the terrain tooLouis Mazzini
Underrated offbeat westernRay Anselmo
A surprisingly complex drama for the era, especially for a Western - more reminiscent of Legends of the Fall or The Power of the Dog than Red River. Robert Mitchum gives a spiky performance as the family villain, and Tab Hunter is a surprise in what may be his best work. 8.5/10Available on YouTube as of May 2022 for an inexpensive rental.
