This was Disney’s first completely live action film and they did a great job with it, but if we are being honest the real reason to watch is Robert Newton as Long John Silver. I think Newton was emulated by so many other actors after this movie came out and everyone that was going to play a pirate studied his performance, including Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. Newton’s characterization is rich and complex and it helps that Silver is not written as being completely bad but has a big soft spot for Jim Hawkins. Hawkins is basically a stand-in for the target audience, meaning young boys and helps the story become theirs. Few of the live action Disney films reach the heights of this film. I’d probably give it a 9/10. 4 years 5 months ago -

One of my absolutely favourite books as a child, turned into a fairly good film.
The performances were fairly good, and the restored colour was impressive. 11 years ago -

I viewed the restored version on TCM. Beautiful color and imagery but I never did care for the storyline. 11 years ago
