It's sometimes surprising to me how good Ben Stiller, the writer-director, can be. Tropic Thunder is a great comedy about movie-making in the Hollywood system, with memorable, hilarious and quirky turns by various stars including Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, spoofing mostly Apocalypse Now - a war film in trouble and over-budget - but hitting all sorts of targets along the way, sometimes lovingly, sometimes viciously, but always justly. Beautiful cinematography too; it plays at being the Oscar-baiting war film the characters are trying to make.
Very funny indeed!! Second watching points out this is a goddamn classic in the making. On par with Anchorman in terms of sheer surreal excellence and one liners. The film both works on its own merits and as a parody, which is rare. I just think it got overlooked for no good reason.
Ah, man. Funniest movie I have ssen in a while! RDJ and Tom Cruise is on point, man. Whoo! This is my type of humor. Suprised this isn't ranked higher. Should be on some lists. This is just over the top, ridicioulus and too much fun. The introducing trailers and ads are also enormously funny, and is actually used troughout the movie. this movie is so quoteable, "never go full retard", "pump you breaks kid. That man is a national treasure". SO GOOD. God damned, I'm happy now. I feel like this movie is overlooked.
