Relative to the Cohen Brothers' other magnificent films, True Grit is a milquetoast amid true brilliance. While there is nothing particularly wrong with this film, it seems to lack a focused point to its story that could give the viewer any satisfaction. What's more, the aversion to contractions in dialogue draws the viewer out of the film so frequently that it's hard to ever settle in to enjoy it.
Honestly one of my favorite Cohen brothers films and probably the best true western since Unforgiven. Beautiful cinematography by Roger Deakins, and great performances by Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Hailee Steinfeld. A great update of the John Wayne classic, dare I say better? Its too bad this movie didn't win as many awards as it probably should have.
The Coen Brothers' remake of the John Wayne classic (or if you prefer, their adaptation of the Charles Portis novel). While nowhere near my favorite Coens film (it may yet grow on me), it had their trademark mix of comedy and tragedy, strong performances (Jeff Bridges creates yet another fun character, Matt Damon is surprising as the dumbass Ranger, and Hailee Steinfeld steals every scene she's in) and quirky decisions that will either take you out of the film or elevate its worth. In this case, the controversial elements will be the lack of contractions (straight from the blank verse-sounding novel apparently) and the low-key ending (that shows the consequences of the revenge story in a way few movies do). The more I write about it, the more I liked it.
Why did he have to shoot Little Blackie.
Also, why's nobody mentioning Matt Damon - he did a very good job and sometimes almost steals the light from Mr. True Grit!
frankqb didn't use any big, elaborate, complex words. If you don't agree with his review, that's one thing (although some of you seem to really get you panties in a bunch over a brief review which wasn't all that negative). On the other hand, if a reviewer uses one or two words that you might not know (and apparently can't figure out using context clues) than you only prove your own stupidity by not picking up a fucking dictionary.
Way better than the original with John Wayne. I saw this for the first time a few years back, before I had ever watched the original (I saw that last year sometime). I turned out the Wayne version wholly expecting it to be superior, yet came away finding it lackluster.
Bridges embodies 'grit' where Wayne absolutely does not. I don't know what the general consensus is on which is the superior film; though I find this to be leaps and bounds better than the original. Indeed, one of those rare instances where a remake triumphs over the first adaptation.
Having not seen the John Wayne version yet I have nothing to compare this with. However, this movie was darker than I expected. It also was better than I expected mostly due to Jeff Bridges' performance. I've never really been a fan of Bridges but his work lately has been winning me over. Great movie.
though i don't like western movies much, since they all seem same to me one way or another, i didnt get bored in this one at least which makes it fine. last quote was good which is "time just gets away from us" and the ending was reasonable.

Great looking and extremely well acted by all leads and really liked the movie but the movie IS lacking in excitement for a western.BoogieSmith

Full of satiric humors, i love it!aussieflickfan
I love westerns. Even if I had not known it was a remake, I would've wanted to see it for the actors alone. I was not disappointed.Showing items 1 – 15 of 40
