Between this and The Immigrant, I've found that the beauty in James Gray's films is not the breaking of new ground. He tells stories that are familiar, but he is completely nonjudgmental towards every single one of his characters. Even as they do things that could be considered wrong or unethical from a distance, he treats them with such a delicacy that even the lowest moments become beautiful. It's a rare gift of storytelling.
