It's kind of a mess, but an entertaining mess.

It felt like everything was going a bit too quick. But it settled towards the end and I was emotionally inbvested in the characters. The villain was a douche bag and I really wanted him to get his come-uppance.
Tom hardy did a great job portraying the anti hero. Also, I like how we got layers to venom that goes beyond a black and white portrayal of hero and villain.

Also, venom is the best wingman anyone could ask for - straight up looool.

As I was watching the events of the movie unfold, I was imagining how well meshed the scenes between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardys Venom has potential to be. I hope they continue this version of the venom, as it had a brilliant post credit scene which would be intriguing to see in the form of a sequel.

It wasn’t a movie out of this world but it was good enough!

I think it's fascinating that everybody basically agrees about what this movie is - it's insane, and ridiculous and makes no sense, but Tom Hardy and the Venom/Eddie relationship is great.
But apparently it just depends on how much you are game for the insanity and don't mind all of the many many things that don't work in favour of the one thing that does, or do you focus on the many many things.
I thought it was a glorious fucking insanity and I had a lot of fun with it, after Venom shows up. Before that, it's really boring and that's the worst thing about it. After Venom shows up, yes, it's not great as a quality movie, but it is never ever boring.

I was willing to give this movie a bunch of passes because I enjoy Venom as a character so much. It's a shame that it didn't work as well as I hoped. The plot didn't feature enough connective tissue, the characters were weak, and there wasn't enough Venom. It feels like a serious missed opportunity. If they're lucky enough to make a sequel, maybe it won't be as poorly put together as this one. I'm actually kind of sad about this, the potential was there.

I mean, I understand what people are saying and everything, but if they made a hundred of these, I would watch every single one. Twice.

This is a film straight out of 2002. From the poorly-paced superhero origins story, to the edgy music, to the romantic subplot, to the sense of humour, and even to the CGI, this feels like a relic from a time the cinema industry has long-since left behind. Of course this is hardly surprising coming from Sony, who famously opined that "EDM (electronic dance music) is the defining music for Millennials. Wondering if there's an EDM angle somewhere with Spidey?".

Honestly though, it kind of works, just because the film plays everything so straight-faced and completely lacks self-awareness in spite of its own absurdity and antiquity. It's bordering on so-bad-it's-good territory, which is definitely preferable to being the latest in a long line of mundane, by-the-numbers superhero films.

Certainly not good - the plot and characters are thin and generic, the effects are at times dodgy (the climax, with two Symbiotes fighting in the middle of the night, is really hard to follow), there are boring moments - but it's watchable, mostly because of Tom Hardy's fun and often unhinged performance (both as Eddie Brock and the cavernous voice shouting obscenities on his head).

This should have been R rated. As it is, it's just kinda boring.

Well, the film has Tom Hardy freaking out and sweating like a pig half of its runtime, which is pretty fucking cool in my book. On the one hand, a rather formulaic comic film, on the other, wackier than anything from the MCU. I like.

Venommmmm Venommmmmm... So yeah, Venom. Can he work without the Spider-Man baggage? I think they found a way, giving the symbiotes a space invaders objective and Eddie Brock a more crusading spirit - still a loser, because he doesn't know when to leave well enough alone, but no grudge against Peter Parker or whatever. Mostly played as horror, though the more gory moments are actually off-screen, it's a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde story, and the relationship between Brock and Venom is the highlight of the film. You have to wonder where the symbiote gets its personality (from Eddie himself? I wish it were addressed more), but their inner/outer monologue is rather fun. The one big flaw is the underwritten turn for the character, when he goes from malignant monster to anti-hero, but Eddie and Venom are the only fleshed out characters in a crowd of underwritten characters (played by a lot of actors I feel interested in however). The initial action makes Eddie a kind of Plastic Man, if he were made of black rubber, with lots of fun action gags, and that doesn't really go away when he goes full Venom. So yeah, a lot more fun than I thought it would be - big dumb fun - and though I can't hack Carnage in the comics, I'd still be down for a Venom/Carnage throw-down in a sequel. I'm as surprised as you are.

Tom Hardy and Venom's love/hate relationship is pretty entertaining and I really liked that. But the story was just a mess and the common mispronunciation of symbiote was making me pull my hair out.

It could easily be better, but I don't know why this gets panned in particular. There's no way it is objectively worse than Thor, Wonder Woman and the Black Panther, and it's way more entertaining than them and has some humor that actually hits the mark.

This movie has some serious identity problems. The first half of the film is a long-winded origin story with some PG horror elements. Lots of love for Tom Hardy's performance, but everthing else feels wasted. But then the Venom character kicks in and they open up a great can of fun!
