A great movie to watch while getting drunk. The kafkaesque hopelessness strangled my neck though for a good two or three minutes. I couldn't breathe for a while.
Director Ted Kotcheff and his crew accompanied a real-life cull of the animals for the making of the film. The kangaroos were shot so their hides could be used for making soft toys and the meat sold for dog food.
The director said: "I did not use 75% of what I filmed that night as it was too bloody and horrifying...The Royal Australian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals kept urging me to use this footage because they wanted Australians and the world to see what was being done to kangaroos in the outback: the wholesale slaughter and carnage being committed every night."
Have to agree with those that call this one of the best Australian films ever. WAY too accurate an appraisal of the dark side of the Australian character to find favour in Australia, but searing, fantatsically fatalistic and totally memorable. The killing of our iconic kangaroos is bogan nihilism perfected and SHOULD be utterly revolting-yet-profound in a Salo-ish kind of way.
Wow! Way more than what I expected when I decided to see this movie. A true masterpiece on existentialism. A perfect cinematograpy and decent storytelling. If you ever wonder if you should watch it or not: Never ever hesitate. Put this movie first in the line.

Terrific film about the destructive influence a small, isolated Australian town has on a schoolteacher.Animal lovers take note - the kangaroo killings are real, and pretty disturbing (which was the intent, no doubt).

So haunting. An incredible piece of art. Felt a lot longer than 109 minutes, in a good way.Paulorsadv

After two days this film is still haunting me.harrison27
Donald Pleasence in this is, as far as I'm aware, the only convincing Australian accent by a non-Australian in all of cinema.CorPse
