Rather conflicted on this one - on the one hand you have decent (though not stellar) acting and a plot with enough twists to keep things interesting (even though I pegged the 'bad guy' fairly early on), but on the other hand you've got the start of the 'Red Menace' and Hollywood's justification of what we'd certainly see as 'by (almost) any means necessary.' Yes, the late 40s documentary-style feel works if one is interested in the propaganda message but it does rather feel naive, looking back. People now would not only be unimpressed with the wholesale invasion of personal privacy no matter the reason - well, unless you were 'away' you know all about Snowden and friends. How the world has changed, and yet we seem to repeat the mistakes over and over again. So the movie works as something of a cautionary tale - one the makers probably never intended.
On a very side note, methinks Grayson was a bit sweet on O'Hara... 8 years 5 months ago
