A brave performance by Michelle Williams of a woman trying to survive in a fundamentally cruel and unfair world. I disagree with an earlier poster who said that the film lacked powerful moments.
Director Kelly Reichardt is very good at framing powerful moments at a very human scale. There's a powerful moment about halfway through the film where Wendy calls her sister for connection, only to be coldly rebuffed. That's essentially the scale this film goes for, not performances filled with bombastic histrionics.
I'm usually a sucker for realistic beat downs, but the minimalism in Wendy and Luce lacked the power needed to be a complete success. It does contain moments of great acting and true emotions but most is just watered out and forgotten about moments later. The ending was also somewhat cliche, and again - it lacked the power to truly get me involved. Good enough though. 6/10.
