I love everything about this musical. The sets, the colors, the actors, the conflict and the music - simply perfect and timeless. A little sceptical about the upcoming remake but it'll never alter the legacy of this film.

The fantastic use of setting and brilliant choreography are enough to recommend the film despite its general silliness.

Romeo & Juliet on New York's streets, West Side Story, is one of the great classic musicals, and watching it for the first time, I kept thinking "THAT song is in THIS movie?!", the mark of a truly iconic film. Of course, I don't really care about Mariah, not when Rita Moreno is heating up the screen with sass and style. Now, obviously, I'm a Shakespeare nut, but I'm also a big fan of Stephen Sondheim, and though limited because he didn't do the music (Leonard Bernstein is a bit too bombastic for my tastes), we still find his knack for uncovering the paradox in any situation, where it's both good and bad to be in America for a Puerto Rican, and where white boys make fun of the excuses that are likely to get them out of jail if caught by the cops. In other words, the film is just as topical today as it was in 1961. I quite enjoyed the choreography of the long dance sequences (even if they initially made me think the gang warfare would be pretty toothless) and the various effects Bob Wise uses to give the film an expressionistic, theatrical vibe. One to revisit every so often, I can feel it.

The highlight of camp, but it's brilliant.
For a movie about racism ... it's funny that there's no fysical difference between the white folk and Puertoricans.

The song America is the wittiest thing I've heard in a long long time. The lyric is just so funny and the rhymes are terrific!

A cheesy Romeo & Juliet set in mid-1900s New York, with music and dancing.

Apart from her voice and a couple of iconic songs it was unbearable to watch.

There's a reason this is an iconic American classic. Beautifully choreographed, shot on authentic New York sets, with some of the most amazing music in Broadway history. Groundbreaking for its time, and it stands up well to the test of time too.

Suggesting, even facetiously, that a movie should be destroyed is kind of idiotic. It's the epitome of selfishness to say "I hated this movie, therefore no one else should be able to see it." Remember, people, the fact that you don't like something doesn't mean that everyone else should be deprived of seeing it, especially with a film like this that has brought a lot of joy to a lot of people, and which has one of the best and most important musical scores of the twentieth century. It's absolutely fine that you don't like the film, but suggesting that it should be destroyed because of that is, once again, really stupid.
