This series just has never excited me much. Too much xenophobia - and I'm sorry, just because it's righteous, it's still xenophobia and that just gets under my skin no matter who normalizes it.Also, there is one brief scene where a character punches a horse in the face. That's bad enough, but if one looks closely, one can see the horse's hooves being pulled out from underneath the animal with some sort of wire/string/line/whatever. Really, no animal welfare in HK in the early 90s?
That's two strikes and we're barely 1/3rd through. grrrrrrr
This is the first of the remastered versions I've seen in the series, part of the Criterion Collection. Can't say I noticed the wires in the prior three films, but I believe I saw at least the first and maybe second installment on a much smaller screen (though with comparable resolution). In this installment, the wires, especially towards the end, are very obvious. This doesn't seem to be the intent like when the good crew goes to the Red Lantern Temple. There, they are obviously showing the 'magic'/wires, but I don't believe the intent was for viewers to notice them in other parts. So, depending on one's viewpoint, this is either good because it allows one to 'see' the 'magic' OR it totally blows the fantasy/fantastic element.
Can't really remember exactly which "foreign devils" were in which installment, but this ranks down with at least one other episodes in the basement of my mind.
