It's hard to believe that this is such an incoherent mess... when the other Browning-directed vampire film starring Bela Lugosi (Dracula, of course), was such a masterpiece.
Check out the "subliminal" message when Keaton catches the guy picking up the wallet full of money: behind Keaton the word "funny" is scratched into the wooden wall.
Well, having not read the book, I have to say this was one of the most fucked-up and disturbing movies I've seen in a long time. Depressing too... and I was expecting a comedy.
I agree with you, MaxS, although my exploration in Tarr films is limited (I'm going off my assumptions). I can't say for sure, but I think sometimes Rosenbaum will leave out some films which he thinks are more accessible than others... stopping to put more "popular" films on his list on if they are considered overlooked by him... or some other esoteric rationale.
There is only one conceivable reason why any serious film-goer would consider Bette Davis' looks & charm to be "intolerable". It is this: their orange, spray-tanned girlfriends see something striking in her; being unable to comprehend her unique beauty, these females turn their confusion into a contagious jealousy that their milquetoast boyfriends readily lap up.
That being said, I enjoy the movie, and Davis is a shining star as always. However, the stunning composition cannot be overcome by a redundant and somewhat predictable script. Yet I must reiterate that the cinematography is breathtaking at times.
I agree that there are some superb performances and "typically skillful direction by Lang" (I personally enjoyed the film more than Lang's magnum opus, Metropolis). But I have to disagree with MrE2Me when he says that this is "ordinary material". The script is actually astonishingly good. And to top it all off, Paul Douglas is fucking incredible.

What happened to the IMDb info for this list? When I click on "IMDb Boards - Horror 500" link by the "intro" at the top, there is nothing at that link... or perhaps I should leave a comment on the IMDb horror boards asking them...
Completely unnerving. It starts slow, but give it time and its haunting atmosphere will creep into your bones, and really scare you. It's been a while since I've seen a horror film this good.
