Nothing to do with music? I guess you must have watched this with the sound off, as it was teeming with music. It is primarily labeled as a drama-which it is-though there's nothing unwarranted about tagging this secondarily as music.
In any case, I just finished watching, after having been recommended this film by a Spanish friend of mine. After having read the very brief synopsis, my first thoughts were 'well, this must have been the original inspiration for the film 'K-PAX''-and indeed it was. The adaptation was great; though in this case, as it is the majority of the time, the original was infinitely better.
To echo the sentiments of the previous comments, I'm going to say this is an extremely underrated film. Not one list? I can't believe it. I was laughing throughout the entire damn thing.
This was my third Tsuchimoto documentary, and I enjoyed it just as much as the previous two.
Although perhaps a little longer than what is necessary, his work is highly personal, exploring deeply whatever subject matter he desires to bring to attention.
If viewed together with Minamata: The Victims and Their World, this really does bring the 'last word' on the subject, at least insofar as the medium of film.
I can't understand how this virtual porno made it into ANY top list, let alone the one which is supposedly representative of Japan's greatest efforts in cinema. Perhaps I'm just being obtuse, and there really is a reason for this. Maybe a certain group of people were trolling with the mentality of 'let's vote in the worst fucking movie we can find, just for grins!', or something of that nature.
Oh, and for anyone who is possibly waiting for a subtitled version of this travesty... don't bother. I think I speak for every person who has checked this film when I say that the English translation really didn't aid the story in any way whatsoever. Each line of the piss-poor script may as well have been a series of farts, squeaks and grunts.
Well, this was new and exciting. I'm not even going to add it to my dislike list. Doing so would be like beating up the one autistic kid in gym class.
I could understand if Brakhage had something of an 'era' in which he produced shorts of this style; but he made them continuously, varying little in style, runtime, innovation, etc, for damn near half a century.
I don't dislike every one of the man's works, but it's not a good ratio.

Brilliant, and criminally unknown. I urge anyone who has the opportunity to see this do so. You won't be disappointed. Then again, coming from Yamada, I expected no less.

Excellent cinematography, though Brakhage's veritable list of players, it must be said, were performing with the hose only half open.In spite of that minor fault, Brakhage has truly tapped the well of innovation dry. What a pioneer.
