Honestly, not too bad. I've still a little Japanophilia left in me from the teenage years, which may have bumped it up just a tad. Solid action scenes nevertheless.

Another thinly-veiled attempt to glorify the ever increasing breed of 'herbivore-men' adapted to loneliness, social isolation, and escapism via video games and other nerd culture. Anyone remotely well-adjusted and not into gathering their culture from the artistic bargain-bin will see nothing special in this one.

But The Shining homage was decent, shitty dialogue excepted.

This may just be the greatest film ever made.

Klondike Bongo, you'd do very well to point your face towards the screen next time you watch a film, not away from it. I'm no expert, but that's how most of us do it.

I haven't been as annoyed by a voice on screen since Claire Danes in Temple Grandin, or perhaps Jennifer Jason Leigh in Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle.

Whether or not it was a good likeness I found erroneous; the breathy, tobacco-honed speech was like nails on a chalkboard for me - almost to the point of making the film unwatchable.

Probably the most graphic sex scenes in any film, even more so than Lust, Caution, or the remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice.

I also could've sworn the narrator was Maggie Smith.

First!

This is pretty bad to be honest. It almost feels like a third of the film was completely struck from the final cut - the trial being completely disproportionate in terms of screen time and loftiness for the actual 'crime' we see.

From the perspective of a courtroom genre it has its merit; but the film overall isn't worth the time.

Not sure why this has 2015 listed as the year of release. It's from this year.

The 'tech' element kinda' ruined this one. Would have been ten times better had they gone with more of a plausibly constructed 'Old Boy'-style plot, where the victim was punished due to actual misdeeds, not arbitrarily.

Well, that was a surprise.

I've read several biographies of Caravaggio, from Vasari to the modern era, in addition to having seen several documentaries and other more recent biopics. This one stands out in all the wrong ways.

I get it: there are numerous anachronistic elements, the speech was a clever 'ha-ha!' knee slap at the start, and the rusty brogue of the northern parts came through, admittedly, in some very humorous contexts throughout the film. But as mentioned by another poster here below, those things didn't carry nearly as much traction as they may have done around the original release date (anyone care to chip in?), or, above that, for anyone who is even remotely acquainted with the man beforehand.

A gimmicky, piss-poor attempt at a biopic. All one can glean from it is that Caravaggio is a painter, he had... patrons of sorts, and he was involved in some questionable society at times. Even the somewhat brief run-time cannot pardon that failure.

Two things are certain in this movie:

1) That's one hell of an opening scene.

2) José Coronado is one bad motherfucker.

Highly recommended. Santos Trinidad (Coronado) is definitely up there on the much scrutinised 'top scumbag police officers/detectives' list.

Not a fan. All the twists and turns in the plot, quirky editing and changes quickly became tedious. The first thirty minutes felt like hours, and the rest was more of the same.

I should also say, comparisons to All About Eve and A Streetcar Named Desire are nothing short of absurd. Those two films are masterpieces of classic cinema, this is infantile and hackneyed in comparison. I'd instead suggest watching those two, and forgetting about this.

Like others have said, there were too many gaps in my knowledge about the subject matter to really connect with this one.

With war as a whole (where it concerns art), there seems to be a sort of tertiary pyramid of relevance through which one relates - first that of wars you have experienced personally, either through fighting or through surviving, as it were; wars that ravaged your country, perhaps affected your elder relatives, but otherwise occurred before your time; and those which are out of the entire sphere of coherence you yourself experience, like the one related in the film.

But of course, the animation style and techniques, the score, story progression, dialogue - everything else was fantastic. Incredibly well made.

I really wasn't expecting to like this, it being a) based on an anime, and b) aimed at the teen/adolescent market. The main actor reminded me of a slightly more ridiculous Sonny Chiba in The Street Fighter, if that's at all possible. Very lighthearted, and very fun.
