One of the most homoerotic films I have ever seen. The shirtless beach volleyball scene with the Kenny Loggins song "Playing with the Boys" takes the cake.
The movie can be a little rough around the edges in term of the final product lacking the extra polish it needs, but this is definitely one of the better films that came from this period.
Certainly a decent movie, but not one that will go down in the history books or anything. It was significantly better than I expected, but my expectations were basically at zero.
The stupid name of this movie made me put off seeing it for quite some time. But I can say now that this film is a quality piece of work. It is definitely one of Clint Eastwood's best directorial efforts.
This movie was trying to go somewhere, but it is just too muddled for it to accomplish much of anything. Pacing is bad and the movie is generally pretty uninteresting.
I thought this was way better than your average action flick involving superpowers. I really got into it. I've seen this movie at least four times and loved it every time. The set design and location shooting in particular really help make the film something special.
Certainly wasn't bad. Didn't live up to its potential given the interesting premise and pretty good leads (I don't like Julia Roberts really, but she could have worked in this role). Worth watching, but don't expect it to knock your socks off.
It is a very solid movie. Does it deserve to be as high on as many lists as it is, of course not. But I guess the draw of this movie is that it is high art that just about everyone can relate to. That is hard to do. So in that way, this movie is quite an accomplishment.
Terrence Malick tells quite an incredible story, but if you are expecting a lowest common denominator Michael Bay script to be spoonfed to you, then go watch Transformers 3 or Mr. Popper's Penguins.
This is arguably the best film I have ever seen in terms of visual storytelling. The camerawork in this film is up there with many of the most masterfully shot films in history. And this film really captures what it is like to be alive, to grow up as a child, and to just even experience the things that are around you through a childlike lens of discovery.
This is not a film for everyone, but if you just let your guard down and get rid of your preconceptions of what you think a film should be, you will have quite the journey. Films like this are the reason many people become directors in the first place.
Sparklemotions said it pretty well that the movie drags on a bit towards the end. I will add that this movie really wants to be great, but there is just something lacking in the execution that prevents it from doing so. It is hard to describe exactly what that is. Probably just losing focus in some parts of the film, not a tight enough screenplay, and/or not quite enough editing.
That is not to say that this is a bad film by any stretch of the imagination. I think it is pretty good and would recommend it if you like the trailer or premise of the film.
Johnny Depp wasn't a bad Wonka, but this film just stumbles in so many different places that it weighs the whole thing down. Particularly once they get inside the chocolate factory, things just go downhill from there.
Watch the original, you are not missing anything if you skip this one.
Tim Burton tried to be more faithful to the book and we saw how that turned out. Faithfulness to source material is not a criteria by which all film adaptations should be judged. Many should be taken on their own terms, since film is such a different medium and some aspects of a novel do not always translate well to film.
You could also say that the Burton film just blew its load on CGI-Indian oompa loompas.
A solid film, but I am honestly surprised it is on this many lists. I guess it probably was the best western that came out in the 90's off the top of my head.
