It's one of those rare films that I just can't seem to get bored of. Unbelievably quotable as well...

Why was Christian Bale aping James Gandolfini/Tony Soprano throughout? Absurd performance. The soundtrack was over-egged as well. Not worthy of much praise, really.

Still need to see "Horses, don't they?"...

It's a shame that there isn't a comprehensive boxset. My understanding is that two or maybe three studios own the rights to the bulk of the films, hence why the popular black 14 film boxset on Amazon and such, is "missing" big-hitters such as North by Northwest and To Catch a Thief.

I've always been discouraged from "tackling" these 1001 movies lists, as they seem rather impenetrable and lacking in proper context. Well done to whoever finishes them, mind.

Interesting examination of (This sub)Reddit's collective psyche. Too much Wes Anderson for my liking :)

I thought I completed this list once, but then I got bumped down to 236...14 films due to changes. Now I'm not sure if I ever reached 250 or if I imagined it. Either way, lists and particular this one are quite silly really !

I remember my brother saying one of our teachers believed Andy to be guilty, hence the "redemption" part. Is there actually evidence to back this up?

" and whether it is overrated or not, is up to you to decide. that is merely on the scale of your own expectations."

Subjectivity explained pretty well there. Reviewing the comments for the top 5 films on this site, and all of them descend into similar over/underrated dichotomies...

It has been quite a few years since I've seen this film, definitely need to watch it again in 2014. Having watched 25th hour and a few other films, Norton is growing on me.

The book whilst seminal, isn't exactly a great story in the cinematic sense, so it's no wonder that this adaptation felt a little flat.

Incredibly underrated movie, I planned to blast through it whilst doing some work but sat there fixated instead. A proper 'coming of age' piece.

Thoroughly enjoyable film but not convinced the humor necessarily translated that well. I would probably describe the central relationship as somewhere between Scent of a Woman and the episodes of Curb your Enthusiasm with "Leon Black". Textbook opposites attract with warm French, feel good outcome.

Seinfeld (TV show) fan checking in. Adequate and entertaining. Not sure what the target audience is though as I can't really see the anti-humour, if you would call it that, appealing to kids.

Enjoyable enough. Lot's of window smashing. Reminds me of the new Dredd in someways, not least with the strong female sidekick.

Very hit and miss plot; cut and shut with the two halves IMO but solid cinematography and average Gosling performance saved it.

Another top John Hughes film that found the right mix of comedy and human interest. The two leads were terrific.

Longs to be Goodfellas. Falls up quite short, but was an enjoyable enough gangster flick. 6/10

Thought it was going to be a standard romance film, but turned out to be much better than expected. Even Knightley was tolerable.

Am I the only one who didn't care at all for any of the characters?
