Touching story. However, the movie only truly succeeds in its most violent scenes, and even then I don't know if it was successful because its excessiveness or worse for it. The first half was forced and without passion; the middle, or rather the first battle scene, was one of the most intense moments of a war movie that I've ever seen; and the final act mirrored that of the first half more or less. A lot of weird casting choices. Like Vince Vaughn wrf??? Andrew Garfield was decent, but fit the part rather well.
Jake Gyllenhaal is phenomenal here, giving one of the best performances of his career. Sure, it's not the most original story, but this is not a bad movie by any means. Certainly not worth all the circle-jerky negativity.
I love this movie! The only thing that bugged me was the lead actor. For some reason he didn't seem to fit the role he was trying to play. However, i think this, at least for me, made it even better, or something; it's like it added an air of authenticity to the movie that it would have otherwise lacked. The dialog was great overall, though it did feel a bit forced in parts.
Bravo!! The phrase "that's fucked up" was falling out of my mouth for a minute or so there at the end. That beach scene is something dreams are made of. And never have i been happier to be so wrong about what i thought a movie was going to be about. Also, who would have thought that Keira Knightly would be the least relevant actor from this movie nine years down the road?
This movie really took me by surprise. Great performances by everybody, but Glenn Close and Frank Langella stand out and truly make the most of their time on screen together. I loved how each of the two main characters represented their respective culture's romance film; with Jane representing the French New Wave and Brian with the American flare. Really well done. Can't wait to see what Victor Levin does next!
A good movie that's not deserving of its low rating. Solid character arc in the main character. The biggest fault is the mishandling of Felicity Jones' character. She commands the camera be on her as much as possible and this movie seemed to really go out of its way to neglect her. Definitely worth a watch though.
Also, Alfie Allen plays yet another character with a Surname ending in joy
A complex and layered drama, marred only by a cringe worthy affair between Emelia and Jonathon. A well-rounded movie with solid acting, camera work, soundtrack, and decent writing.
