I was excited as hell to see the first one when it came out in 2001. Half-heartedly went to see the second one the following year. And finally forced myself to watch Return of the King a few days ago, from nothing more than a sense of duty to finish what I had started. Meh.

I honestly think the disappointment of the series is to the fault of Peter Jackson. Just look at his other films: King Kong, The Lovely Bones. Do we really believe this man to be a good director?

Vaguly remember watching this as a kid. I remember it's where I learned where the expression 'gross anatomy' came from.

This isn't one of the most beautiful of Kubrick's films to look at, but I think it's one of his more interesting stories.

A worthwhile filmgoing experience, though not exactly enjoyable.

A very enjoyable documentary. The material is great and the kids are a lot of fun to watch, especially the little reverand.

Very cool film. So glad NYC is no longer such a hell hole.

Vaguely remember seeing this on TV as a kid and being confused because there was another tornado movie playing in the theaters at the same time.

I've now seen every one of their films, this one being the last I needed to accomplish that. What do I do now?

I love this movie for its look and feel. The story is so so.

I think I needed to watch this in the 70s to really enjoy it. Not a genre I particularly care for, but it was a couple hours well spent.

I wish I had watched this years ago when I first put it on my watchlist. I didn't realize what I was missing out on. So much creative attention put into this. Loved it. One of my rare 9/10s.

A fine little film. More like a long short.

Imagine if a wonderful painting could take up three hours of your time.

Vaguely remember seeing this on TV as a kid, being properly freaked out.

I vaguely remember seeing this in high school. Something about a horribly over the top motorcycle scene.

Wonderful imagery. Great story. The ending did not do it for me, seemed a bit abrupt and awkward.

A dumb little movie that tries too hard, though the ending was kind of sweet.

Unfortunately, I already knew the ending before I watched this one. I wonder how awesome the final scene would have been if I hadn't.

I remember watching this on MTV in high school. The lines from the song "I Know My Calculus" still get caught in my head sometimes. I sing them to my wife.

The problem with The Dark Knight is that the main demographics decided that it was going to be one of the greatest films of all time...well before it was even released. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy based off of a number of factors.

The truth is though that this doesn't belong on any list, except for worldwide box office. Christopher Nolan screened Heat for the entire cast and crew before production. He wanted TDK to be one of the greatest crime dramas of all time, that just happened to be about Batman. Very few people are able to objectively judge this movie for what it really is though. It's a glossy, over-hyped superhero film. It doesn't even touch Heat.

The only thing wrong about this movie is the style it was shot in (over glossy, generic Spielberg blockbuster style). If Kubrick had lived to make it himself, I think it would have been a masterpiece. Even with the bizarre ending left as is, Stanley would have made it interesting.

Given the contemptibleness of the genre, a nearly respectable film.

Not sure why everyone missed this film. It's a very solid 8/10. Good story and well-executed.

If I had seen this film as a 12-year-old child in 1968, I'm pretty sure I would have seizured within the first hour. I just about seizured as a 28-year-old man in 2011. The look and feel of 2001 are superb, and hold up extremely well after 40 years.

Space Odyssey proves that a realistic portrayal of science-fiction material is much more impressive than glossy, over-the-top CGI.

Thanks for pointing out my error, Labraxas. Fixed.

Lampad: Glad you like the list. The output of 1973 alone is pretty phenomenal.

I'm still making modifications to this list. Doing some research to make sure it includes not just the best of the era, but really only films that embody the spirit of New Hollywood and at least loosely fit the more important criteria. Let me know if you suggest any modifications.
