There is no logical reason this short should be funny. When it started, I found myself thinking: "What possible terrible slapstick have I gotten myself into watching now?". But by the end, this simple yet genius comedy of errors had me laughing the hardest and longest I've laughed in a long time. There were tears of laughter as the short progressed to its climax. A real surprise gem.
NOTE: Despite the title, the short is in fact in English. It just simply isn't very well known in the English world, and is typically introduced by a German narrator as it airs there (and several other countries) each New Year's Eve. Also, there is more than one recording of this short, the traditional one is 18 minutes or so in length and is the better of two I watched.
As delightful a slapstick comedy as the day it was made. Keaton's physical humor is second to none and keep familiar gags fresh and exhilarating. The quick-paced-never-miss-a-beat editing and camera work make this one of the best short comedies around. In a word: hysterical.
I was initially excited about watching the development of civilization from the point of view of two-rock piles and the conversation supported my excitement. But the film quickly loses its appeal as soon as the rocks stop talking to each other. Nonetheless, the animation is fantastic (save for the cave humans) and the end result is not displeasing, however it feels slightly empty.
Artistically sound and original, the single-frame style suits the disorientation of the characters. However, 48 years and countless viewings of 12 monkeys later, the story, while original, ceases to shock.
Pleasant-enough CGI though not exactly breathtaking. I'm still not sure what he was setting up with the rope after 4 times through. Without that initial understanding, the ending is (while understandable) not exactly satisfying.
As Kadmium said, this short has a feeling similar to the montage at the beginning of Pixar's Up, but I would add that it has more detail and more despair as well.
Upon further review of the comments, I quite like The Major's idea: "Will the number of checked movies that do not appear on any list be separated from the number of movies that do appear on lists? That would be great, so we can compare with other people how many "good/popular" and "not so popular" movies we have seen."
Yeah, I've got to chime into the "going to ruin the point" chorus, here. Imported movies really can't count toward one's score. It would destroy the competitive nature (or at least what I see as a competitive nature) of the site.

While, yes, I'd like to be able to import movies, I would hate to have them counted toward my total, as they do not appear in an officially sanctioned critically-acclaimed or mass-population-produced lists.

Every frame of this film could stand alone as a remarkable and breathtaking photograph while its themes on creativity, fidelity and truth resonate across the artistic spectrum.
A fun bad-guys-on-the-run style comedy with serious dark tones haunting it. Fantastic performances all around, and an unpredictability that makes this film engrossing.
There is something completely baffling about this film. Perhaps it's that its stars spend so little screen time together, we can never really hope they end up together. Then again, perhaps, like its inspiration An Affair to Remember, "men never understand this film".
Though its metaphors and dialogue are a little cliché, the film's point rises above these weaknesses and some mediocre acting to be a very pleasant viewing experience. Some of the best live-action cinematography I've seen in this shorts list.
Pleasant animations, great prose, and a truly inspiring story, but in the end, this short is sadly less than the sum of its parts -- and often those parts are slightly incongruous if not soporific.
