If you don't have 6 hours to spare for the greatly superior Russian version, this will do as a sort of 'Readers Digest' version, and actually cracks along at a fair pace. Obviously you lose lots of subtleties, but.. it's OK.
I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one doing the Halliwell's list...I'd be happy to make contact with some one (preferably in the UK) as I'm struggling to find about 20 or 30 of them
Good to see someone else agrees - a chilling study of character and.. well, these days you would call it work place bullying.
(In case anyone mis-interpenetrates that remark, I mean the bullying that occurs from Heydrich to his minions to get his way. I do NOT equate the Holocaust with minor office bullying)
Unfortunately I saw this only a few days after seeing 'South' - that's the one about the Shackleton expedition, which I found more interesting.. and better - or should I say more striking - photography.
That is a shame to compare the two.. considering everything, it's remarkable EITHER survived, and the Bfi deserve many thanks for saving and restoring this one..
Even it had come out in the 50's at the height of 'red menace' paranoia, it would have been barely acceptable.. but in the detente era, a hateful piece of nasty xenophobia.
.. But still intriguing for a display of attitudes. Compare to corny 1940's stuff with stereotype Nazis played by Conrad Veidt or George Sanders.
(I said compare - not rank along side of - either CV or GS could act the socks off anyone of these..))
Highly flawed, but one of my favourites. Deserves to be better known. I believe there is a 'directors cut' in existence, but lost in copyright hell.. and as (I believe) Michael Mann himself is not so keen on the film, unlikely ever to surface.
Is there a check list for the films sampled in this film? I think I've about done it.. 'The Bribe' being the tricky one - I had to get a R1 import from the USA.
I was very dissapointed to find I'd done such a low percentage of these.. But there are some Saint or Falcon ones I've not ticked that i probably have (I'm afraid sometimes they all merge a bit into one another..)
