still makes me laugh after seeing it three times, so that's a good sign. davidson manages to be self-deprecating without being pathetic and edgy without being intolerant. his delivery is frequently interrupted with giggles, filler words, and stuttering, which would typically annoy the hell out of me, but it seems in-character for his rather blasé persona. i recommend giving this one a watch.
the premise is excellent, but the execution is sorely lacking. i take no issue with the actors' performances, but rather the script they were dealt — personally, i didn't find it funny in the slightest. this film couldn't even get the ghost of a chuckle from me.
An alright movie with alright acting, but the "stringent-vegan-descends-into-savagery" plot is simply far too similar to Raw (2016) for me to properly enjoy it. Some of the recurring themes (psychosis, family, "predator vs. prey") felt cliché and ham-handed, and I struggled to feel any emotional connection to the protagonist or her girlfriend.
If you can look past a few instances of shaky acting and complete lack of scientific method or ethics (
hello, predatory researcher-patient relationship?
), this movie is worth a watch for its aesthetic value alone. The SFX dream sequences are excellent, and the carefully-stylized, retrofuturistic vibe is incredibly visually captivating—though I was unsatisfied with the last half of the plot events, lacked sympathy for any of the characters, and disliked the ending, I still enjoyed the ride. Viewers familiar with the city of Edmonton (Alberta) will have some additional fun identifying local establishments throughout the film.
really interesting topic. a very informative look at the gruelling training and high standards involved in the kpop industry, and the toll it takes on the idols and the bonds within their groups.
terrible, honestly. no clue how such a good cast ended up in such an awful film — the actors' performances are decent, but the rest is just deplorable. it's as if the creators wanted to make a philosophically-deep, "military-and-religion" version of Event Horizon, but got stuck with a script written by high school students and SFX from Spirit Halloween.
It's cheesy, it's cliché, it's very, very late-90s, and it definitely does not pass the Bechdel test ... but it's got Matthew Lillard as a punk hockey player with a terrible Canadian accent, and that was enough for me to thoroughly enjoy it. Mostly lame jokes, but a couple genuinely funny ones thrown into the mix.
Meditative in its visual beauty and rhythm. Skillfully evokes themes of urbanity/wilderness, solitude/company, masculinity, escape, persecution, and more.
it has its flaws (pacing, somewhat-unoriginal plot, at times a little heavy-handed), and i was unimpressed with most of the ending — but still, what a film! i found it tense, intriguing, at times disorienting, and — as usual — Rory Culkin's performance tied the whole thing together.
i hope more people discover this one, because it's worth some serious discussion. the last twenty seconds really made the film "click" for me.
A stupid movie full of stupid characters.
I actually did enjoy Halloween (2018), so I had some small modicum of hope going in ... Boy, was I disappointed. I spent half the thing scoffing at laughable inaccuracies, and the other half fuming at the sheer idiocy of everyone involved — I enjoy a good "let's rack up the body count" plot line as much as the next person, but the kills were mostly inane ... and mostly deserved, honestly. I genuinely had no sympathy for any of the characters except Laurie and Karen.
Halloween is one of my favourite franchises of all time, but this latest instalment must land somewhere at the bottom of the pile for me. May it rot and be forgotten alongside The Curse of Michael Myers and Resurrection...
Mediocre plot, mediocre execution. The constantly-shifting camera detracts from the intensity of the action. Sprouse gave a commendable performance though, particularly in the last quarter!
odd movie, but that's to be expected from Harmony Korine — largely lacking a conventional story arc, but a fun journey nonetheless, and a mostly-likeable cast of characters with varying degrees of moral grey area.
my only real complaints are that A) the soundtrack is somehow equal parts odd and boring, B) jonah hill's accent is atrocious ... and C) the title of the film genuinely almost put me off of watching it.
Excellent performances by Elizabeth Banks and David Denman (and Jackson Dunn, for the matter), but not a great movie. It would have been more interesting if we had seen Brandon grapple with his conscience a little more — this innocence and fright came across very well when he was 'discovering' his powers, but soon fell completely by the wayside, and then he just seemed like a murderous asshole.
A few good moments of gore mixed in, though!
Unnecessarily difficult watch — not because of the taboo subject matter, but because the entire thing is stylized like a commercial for Ambien.
The film has an excellent soundtrack, and is based on an interesting topic, but the execution and the "floating voiceovers" made it confusing, to say the least. The film jumped between interviewees with very little coherence.
A shame, really. It could have been an interesting (if not morbidly fascinating) documentary, but it tried too hard to be poetic.
Atrocious, compared to the masterpiece that was the original. Predictable, boring, and not an ounce of humour to make up for it.
Julie Delpy was great, though!
This film has a lot more substance than the summary would lead you to believe.
It dragged on a bit, plot-wise, but the performances were all good (particularly Olyphant's) and it had a lot of heart to it.
Some really excellent visuals in this one! The stylized "happy 1950s household" shtick is a little overdone in certain spots, but great performances across the board, and it really manages to put the audience in the shoes of a scared little boy. One of Bob Balaban's most underrated movies, if you ask me.
Stupid, mindless fun. Ken Marino and Chris Wylde's performances ultimately sold it for me.
My only real gripe is that I wish they'd done a bit more with the stylized "retro" segments — they were a cool idea, but the execution just didn't pan out.
Great visuals, interesting topic — the first half is a bit scattered, but the last half had a really great emphasis on psilocybe mushrooms. Overall, I just wish it had had a bit more of a narrow focus.
this movie was exactly what i expected: an over-the-top, campy teen flick with a couple plot twists, historical inaccuracies, and severely cheesy dialogue.
it was pretty fun, even if some of the details were off — for a movie about "heavy metal", the couple minutes of music involved were basically lighthearted glam rock, and the costume design (makeup, clothing) was all wrong.
oddly enough, i think my biggest complaint might lie with the two gas station scenes, though: paying $30 for a couple items in 1988?! that would be $70 in $2021! (did no one think to use an inflation calculator??)
(i'd like to be able to give bonus points for namedropping Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, etc, but ... unfortunately, the writers didn't bother to use Google in the research phase, 'cause they completely forgot about a (very well-known) EP that Metallica released in 1987 — minor gripe, sure, but it was such a blatantly avoidable error that it got on my nerves. they really should have consulted at least one thrash fan in the creation process, yikes.)
solid 6/10 from me — not awful, but not particularly stellar, either. the lengthy runtime could have been used to flesh the characters out more effectively or to gradually grow the viewer's unease, but instead, it just comes across as excessive and somewhat like a useless lead-up to the real action.
my chief complaint is how little emotional investment i felt for the characters — ex. we learn right off the bat that the protagonist is an addict, but that gets scrapped within the first hour in exchange for a single war-trauma flashback scene... — and how sudden some of the developments arrived.
however, with a few "wtf?" moments set aside (
a convenient hole in the ground to escape through AND to get exactly where the protagonist needs to be? seriously? and how many near-throat-slashes do we really need?
), there were some gory moments worth watching, and i did like the ending.
as far as Netflix originals go, this one is pretty standard fare.
