I love the establishing shots. Ozu captures a utility pole the way others would capture Mt. Fuji. Like he's telling us the value of life can be found in its everydayness.
Unintentionally hilarious, and there's something here for everybody! Scene chewing! Stuffed foxes! A curtain with pyramids painted on it! Painful stretches of no dialogue followed immediately by painful stretches of dialogue! Overused lighting effects! An unexpected Peckerwood!
My personal favorite was the climax's principled stance against bigotry, arrived at only after employing a half dozen offensive stereotypes. Huzzah!
Gravity joins the lineup of noteworthy films that have skated by with a thin story on their way to showcasing technical brilliance, and I'd put it in the pantheon with Avatar, Russian Ark, Star Wars, Citizen Kane, Rope, The Thief of Bagdad, and The Jazz Singer.
Certainly a capable remake with good performances all around, and Lemmon, Burnett, and Gardenia in particular. It won't make any lists since it can't compete with "His Girl Friday" in any way. In going away from the overlapping dialog and the romantic aspects, much of the charm from the original is lost. Instead, as if to compensate, we get coarser language and a flaming Bensinger. I mean, pink toilet paper? It's the kind of gay joke a fifth-grader would come up with.
Ugh. This played like a 2-1/2 hour commercial for Barnum & Bailey. The narration was so shameless I found myself rolling my eyes. "Listen to Britain" had less propaganda. The highlights for me were the celebrity cameos.
I think "prejudice and hatred" is a misrepresentation. "Skepticism mixed with curiousity" would be the more likely reaction of a typical cinefile. At any rate, I'm sure the filmmakers themselves would be thrilled to have their creation on said list for any time at all, so this can only be seen as a positive.
One of Rogers & Hammerstein's most beloved scores, and presented beautifully. It was overlooked at the time due to poor box office, and it's hard to see it gaining a new audience. Modern sensibilities make the film's blase treatment of spousal abuse unpleasant.

And yet, if there were a Musical Hall of Fame, this film would merit inclusion based on "The Landlord's Daughter" alone. How fun was that?Movie comment on The Greatest Show on Earth
